Extractions: Information Sources Home ... Tackling Information Tasks Constructing a Resouce Guide Using these directions, you will be able to prepare a Resource Guide to your major or primary minor area of academic study. The Resource Guide will 1) help you, and possibly other students, identify resources in a broad area of study and 2) list specific tools and sources in a given library (such as Buley Library) that may help locate books, magazine, journal, and newspaper articles for research in this area. Set aside a specific day and time each week for completing each step. Using the outline below, it should take 13 weeks (or a semester) to complete your Information Resource Guide. An outline of the final guide contains examples of a title and abstract for your guide.

Extractions: Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative Conference: Sydney Nine years ago a small group of researchers in the United States of America, interested in publishing the results of their work in a digital map format, along with images and text, formed the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative (ECAI). Around 100 delegates drawn from the United Kingdom, Asia, the United States and Australia heard ECAI director, Lewis Lancaster, open the conference and set the theme by stating that digital data needs not only to be persistent but needs to be of high quality, achieved by peer review. The first day focused on issues relating to e-Scholarship and knowledge management followed by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Web. Catherine Cardee of the California Digital Library stressed the need for standardised metadata and data sets to allow the exchange of data. Karen Kemp of the University of Redlands addressed the interaction between the humanities and GIS. While the former documents the human record through time by studying historic documents and cultural objects, GIS demonstrates the physical impact of places and regions on the structure of human society. Thirteen papers were presented during the afternoon under the banner of GIS, databases and the web. Susan Whitfield and Colin Chinnery, two members of the International Dunhuang project, sponsored by the British Library, addressed a number of concerns relating to their project. There is concern at the growing incidence of digitisation at the expense of traditional resources, whether in libraries or museums and the economic and resource costs involved in such projects. Digitisation should be seen as aiding scholarly research and encouraging the development of specialist staff. Digital maps have not only been developed to interface with photographic images of the objects in the project but also to locate information distributed over a 20 square mile area. More detailed information on the project can be found at:

Extractions: In today's rapidly changing world, knowledge of geography is critical if we are to be an informed citizenry. Geopolitical and economic boundaries are changing at a phenomenal pace, and we need to know where places are just to understand the nightly news. Atlases, gazetteers, and thematic atlases are, therefore, very important references sources, and we will examine some representative titles in this section. The Times Atlas of the World and the Oxford Atlas of the World are two standard world atlases. Introductory physical geography, generalized world maps, detailed country maps and an extensive index comprise both atlases. When using atlases, be sure you consult the recent you can find. Although maps available on the Internet are not usually as detailed as those found in print atlases, you can get the most up to date general information via the net. A gazetteer, the Columbia Gazetteer of the World for example, is a geographical dictionary consisting of an alphabetical listing of cities, regions, countries, and physical features. Population, language, climate, government, and economic data are given in a typical gazetteer entry. Thematic atlases are based on the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words. They present encyclopedia type information in graphical form. Examples of thematic atlases include the

Extractions: Geographical information is available in a variety of formats for all audiences. A map is a depiction of certain boundaries of the earth; it may be a political map, showing boundaries for countries, states, counties, and cities. Other kinds include physical maps, which depict geographical features such as mountain ranges and bodies of water, or route (road) maps, which indicate highways, railroads, and the like. Most maps combine several of these features and provide a good deal of information about a geographical area. Atlases are bound collections of maps. They may focus on a single state, a country or region, or the entire world. Some atlases will focus on a theme, such as historical, economic, or social changes; the rest are considered general atlases. Both maps and atlases are useful for showing the relationship of one place to another in geographic terms. In addition to maps and atlases, there are other geographical reference tools, including gazetteers. A gazetteer is a dictionary of place names, giving location information and, often, thumbnail historical sketches of the places described. The federal government is a major producer of maps developed by many agencies, including the Departments of Defense, Commerce, Agriculture and the Bureau of Land Management. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the largest and best-known of government mapmakers; their topographic maps show detailed physical features including elevation. Maps and atlases are also produced by a few well-known and reputable commercial publishers, including National Geographic Society, Rand McNally, and Hammond. Prices for atlases can be considerable, but there are many desk atlases in a smaller size that are reasonably priced. In addition, interactive maps and atlases are now available on CD-ROM and on the Web.
