Extractions: (Organized 1973) Dear Prospective Member: By showing an interest in the Pitcairn Islands Study Group, you have opened yourself up to one of the really unique areas in the philatelic world and we urge you to read on. Pitcaim is a tiny island in the South Pacific Ocean with a population of about 50 people, yet it is the center of interest for some 600+ stamp collectors who are meinbers of PISG. Founded in 1973, PISG was the result of the efforts of Charles Lachman, Marne Groff and Barry Richards. Their goal was to create a group for the study of the stamps, postal history and people of the Pitcaim Islands. During the first year, 70 people enrolled, and since that time, the group has expanded to over 600 members worldwide. One of the reasons for the worldwide appeal of Pitcairn philately is the romance associated with the descendants of the HMAV Bounty mutiny. One finds much of the history of the Pitcaim people depicted on the limited stamp issues that number just a few over 500 since they were first issued in 1940. PISG's award-winning quarterly journal, the

Their unique heritage is also reflected in the traditional foods and cooking styles, arts and crafts and community activities still practised on the Island. Other aspects of the Pitcairn/Norfolk heritage are evident in the observance of celebrations such as Bounty Day and Thanksgiving Day. Bounty Day (or Anniversary Day) is a public holiday which commemorates the arrival of the Pitcairners on 8 June 1856. The Island's adoption of Thanksgiving Day (usually the last Wednesday in November) as a public holiday arose out of its association with American whaling ships. This distinct cultural background may explain why some on Norfolk Island have suggested that Norfolk Islanders of Pitcairn descent are an indigenous people who are entitled under international law to an act of self-determination.

Extractions: Home Index Help Feedback ... Search Norfolk Island Quick Links Territories Related Sites Territories of Australia Norfolk Island is one of Australia's oldest Territories, with a history of European occupation as old of that mainland Australia. The Island was uninhabited when discovered by Captain Cook in 1774. However, there is archaeological evidence of Polynesian or Melanesian presence on Norfolk long before its settlement by Europeans, perhaps as long ago as the twelfth century. The Island was first occupied and settled by the British in 1788 by a party from the settlement at Sydney, then itself only 5 weeks old. The settlement on Norfolk Island played an important role in supplying Sydney's until it became self-supporting. Norfolk's first settlement lasted until 1814, when the community were resettled in Tasmania or Van Diemans Land. Norfolk was reoccupied by the British in 1825 and used as a penal station to house convicts sent from NSW and Tasmania. The penal station was closed in 1855 and its remains are today a major tourist attraction. Norfolk Island formed part of NSW until 1844 and then part of Tasmania from 1844 to 1856. In 1856 the British Government agreed to relocate the 193 descendants of the Bounty Mutineers from Pitcairn Island to Norfolk Island. To this end, Norfolk Island was severed from Tasmania and established as a separate and distinct settlement. From then until the end of the nineteenth century, Norfolk Island became the responsibility of the Governor of New South Wales, acting as the agent of British colonial authorities in London. In practice, the Islanders looked after most of their own affairs and lived a self sufficient and largely subsistence existence.

Extractions: This island has a significant place in Adventist history, says Ray Coombe, assistant to the Adventist Church president in the South Pacific. "For more than 110 years, Adventists around the world have treasured the Pitcairn story," he explains. "Missionary expansion of the Adventist Church in the Pacific was indeed led by the sailing of the 'Pitcairn' mission ship in 1890, and the image of an all-Adventist population tucked away in an isolated Pacific paradise has prevailed ever since." Residents of the island are descended from the notorious "Bounty" mutineers who set Captain William Bligh adrift in 1789 and then settled on a number of South Pacific islands. Since the late 1800s, Pitcairn residents have been known internationally for their devout Christianity and their adherence to a wholistic Adventist lifestyle.
