Pinhole Photography With Instructor Frank Lavelle Note Display of Topics requires a JavaScript compatible browser with JavaScript currently enabled. pinhole photography. pinhole photography. Thurs., Jan. http://residentassociates.org/rap/studio/pinhole.asp
Extractions: Topics: Thurs., Jan. 29 - March 18, 1 p.m. There is a certain magical dynamic to images created with a homemade pinhole camera. This is photography in one of its simplest forms. Equipment is minimal and results are direct, yet the range of potential visual effects is unlimited. Both beginning and advanced photographers learn a variety of ways to make pinhole images, including photographs made directly on 35mm rolls of film, film cartridges, and sheets of light-sensitive paper in boxes or cans. Explore the distinctive pinhole aesthetic, with its ultra-wide angles, infinite depth of field, long exposures, reciprocity, blur, great distortions, and multiple exposures. Also study techniques for enlarging pinhole negatives, contact printing from paper, and the presentation of finished photographs. A supply list is mailed prior to the class. Photo chemistry is provided.

Extractions: This set of pictures were taken with a Lensless Camera Manufacturing Company pinhole camera. This is a 4x5 camera with the equivalent of a 75mm f/228 lens. These are a bit under exposed because I thought the pinhole was f/181. The pictures were taken on Polaroid Type 53 film (ASA 800) using a Polaroid 545i holder. I now have access to a HP Deskscan 3c, so these scans are much better. This set of images were taken as part of a large format class in order to compare the quality of images taken with a pinhole to those take with a lens. The camera used was a Calumet 45N, and the film was Polaroid Type 55. These are a few pinhole images from the Greenmarket at Union Sqaure taken during Fall 1995. These are images from a recent Panix Picnic. A 3D stereo view taken from the Empire State Building. Views from around my office in the Empire State Building. >Pinhole Cameras For C103 Hpage pinhole photography. The keystone of needs. As you will see, pinhole photography has certain distinctive characteristics. You will http://cator.hsc.edu/~mollusk/ChemArt/photo/pinhole.html
Extractions: The keystone of your photography assignment is a high quality negative from which a positive cyanotype or brownprint can be made. Since each of these two methods of making the final print require negatives that are as large as the final print, paper negatives from pinhole camera are well suited to our needs. As you will see, pinhole photography has certain distinctive characteristics. You will probably make a better photograph if you understand how pinhole cameras work. (That's what this page is about.) Just as a reminder, let me mention that your assignment is to make three negatives, at least one of which is of high enouygh quality to print. One thing I like about pinhole photography is the mixture of planning with chance that pervades this method of making an image. I plan to make my shots wide-angle by constructing a shallow box, I plan the composition by looking at the scene, and I have some idea about exposure time because I've taken enough pictures. But there are some pretty big limits to the precision of my plans: Inever get out the image that I have visualized. Since my eyes aren't "wide-angle" devices and since there is no view finder on these cameras, the image that the camera records is never what I expect it to be. What a joy to find things in those images you never expected! Another point in favor of pinhole photography is the idea that you, all by yourself, can make a camera from very simple and rudimentary materials with almost no moving parts that can take artful pictures.

Theories of pinhole-derived images are found in the writings of ancient savants like Aristotle, Chinese philosopher Mo Ti, and Arabian mathematician Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen). Later, artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Canaletto, Dürer and Vermeer used camera obscuras as aids in experimenting with images.
