Extractions: SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the history of the Indian sub-continent: Science and Technology in India History of the Physical Sciences in India In all early civilizations, the study of the physical sciences was neither formalized nor separated from other branches of knowledge. And at least initially, there were few conscious attempts to study the theory of science independently of the practical innovations and technologies that required some application of scientific principles. In most cases, technological discoveries took place without any knowledge of the underlying scientific principles, through hit and trial, and by experience. Sometimes there was a vague or approximate awareness of the science, but the predominant focus remained on the utilitarian aspects of the technique, on practical efficacy, as opposed to how and why something worked or didn't work. In India, the earliest applications of chemistry took place in the context of medicine, metallurgy, construction technology (such as manufacture of cement and paints) and in textile production and dyeing. But in the process of understanding chemical processes, there also emerged a concomitant interest in attempting to describe the basic elements of matter - what they were composed of, and how they interacted with each other to produce new substances. Natural phenomenon were studied in the context of tides, rainfall, appearance of the sun, the moon and stellar formations, changes in season, weather patterns and agriculture.

Large versions of the figures are linked to the small figures on this page. This review explores the relationship between physics and communications over the past 125 years. We find that four eras of major change in communications technology can be traced to the corresponding major discoveries of physics that directly influenced the communications industry. The four major eras of physics we explore are electromagnetism the electron quantum mechanics , and quantum optics The foundations of communications technology lay in the discoveries of the great physicists of the early 19th century: Oersted, Ampere, Faraday, Henry. The telegraph was invented only seventeen years after the discovery of electromagnetism by Oersted in 1820. In spite of this connection, however, much of the early work on communications was done by inventors, such as Morse, Bell, and Edison, who had no formal scientific background. The telegraph was a fairly simple electromechanical system which did not require the development of new scientific principles to commercially flourish in the mid 19th century. Closer coupling between physics and communications occurred shortly after the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. The telephone concept immediately captured the imagination of the scientific community, where the "hot physics" of the period was electromagnetism and wave propagation...

Extractions: This paper gives a short review of the history of statistical physics starting from D. Bernoulli's kinetic theory of gases in the 18th century until the recent new developments in nonequilibrium kinetic theory in the last decades of this century. The most important contributions of the great physicists Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann are sketched. It is shown how the reversibility and the recurrence paradox are resolved within Boltzmann's statistical interpretation of the second law of thermodynamics. An approach to classical and quantum statistical mechanics is outlined. Finally the progress in nonequilibrium kinetic theory in the second half of this century is sketched starting from the work of N.N. Bogolyubov in 1946 up to the progress made recently in understanding the diffusion processes in dense fluids using computer simulations and analytical methods. Most entries reflect the first discovery or correct understanding of a phenomenon or principle. Islamic science flourished during the period from 800 to 1300 AD (or CE, "Common Era"), and there are many instances where a discovery was made by an Islamic scholar, which was then "rediscovered" by a "western" scholar some years (or centuries!) later. While a number of Islamic scholars are mentioned below in conjunction with material of interest to us, much more information is available at Muslim Scientists and Scholars and Muslim Scientists and Islamic Civilization . Note that the names of Islamic scholars were often Latinized in later references in western science; these names are found in parentheses below. Transit of Venus On 8th June 2004 a transit of Venus was observed from Earth when Venus came directly between the Sun and our planet and it was seen to move across the bright solar disk. No-one currently living on the planet had ever witnessed this spectacle as it last happened in 1882. Scientists at the School of Physics and Astronomy recorded the transit and still shots from that recording can be seen from the picture link on the left.
