Extractions: Credit: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Catching neutrinos from the Sun. The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) is hardly your average physics experiment: buried in a 2000 meter deep mine in Ontario and filled with 1000 tons of heavy water, its purpose is to catch neutrinos, spritely particles which form in the center of the Sun and usually fly through the Earth without being captured. Recent results from this experiment have solved a long-standing discrepancy; we now know that the number of neutrinos observed from the Sun is equal to the predictions of theoretical nuclear physics and that neutrinos can oscillate between three different "flavors" during the course of their trip. Links Questions Although our website is about astronomy, we receive many questions that are related, in whole or in part, to the science of physics. This isn't a surprise, because astronomy and physics are intimately tied together. Physics is the study of the laws that govern the universe, and to the best of our knowledge, those laws are the same here and now as they were long ago and far away. In order to explain what we see in the night sky, therefore, we appeal to theories originally developed to explain physical phenomena on the Earth. In addition, the extreme environments encountered in astrophysical situations provide a "laboratory" to test these theories under conditions that we could never hope to recreate ourselves.

General Relativity -- From Eric Weisstein's World Of Physics R.; Bazin, M.; and Schiffer, M. Introduction to general Relativity, 2nd ed. New York McGrawHill, 1975. Anderson, J. L. Principles of Relativity physics. http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/physics/GeneralRelativity.html
Extractions: A theory invented by Albert Einstein which describes gravitational forces in terms of the curvature in space caused by the presence of mass. The fundamental principle of general relativity asserts that accelerated reference frames and reference frames in gravitation fields are equivalent. General relativity states that clocks run slower in strong gravitational fields (or highly accelerated frames), predicting a gravitational redshift . It also predicts the existence of gravitational lensing gravitational waves gravitomagnetism , the Lense-Thirring effect , and relativistic precession of orbiting bodies. Molecular Expressions: Science, Optics And You An educational resource for the science of optics and the physics of light and color intended for teachers, students, and the general public. http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/optics/
Extractions: Galleria Photo Gallery ... Home Science, Optics and You is a science curriculum package being developed for teachers, students, and parents. These activities are designed to promote the asking and answering of questions related to light, color, and optics. The program begins with basic information about lenses, shadows, prisms, and color, leading up to the use of sophisticated instruments scientists use to help them understand the world. The goal of Science, Optics and You is for students to acquire the skills with which they can do microscopic analysis of a variety of samples in multiple ways. Use the links below to navigate to featured subsections of this Website. Timeline in Optics - A summary of important events in optics, microscopy, astronomy, and the physics of light and color. Spanning from prehistory to the beginning of the twenty-first century, the timeline places each discovery, invention, theory, and development into a larger context of the world and its history. Find out when Halley's comet was first observed, how Christopher Columbus caused the moon to go dark, and who really invented the light bulb. Pioneers in Optics - Since the early days in Alexandria when Euclid described the laws of reflection in Optica , the science of optics has fascinated and challenged society's most brilliant minds. Some have made it possible to reach for the stars, while others have helped unveil a microscopic realm on Earth. Tribute is paid to these heroes through brief biographies that acknowledge their tremendous accomplishments and how they have affected civilization.
