It requires an investment; a new camera and memory for the camera; a computer, if you don't already have one, or a better computer if you have an old one; and software for editing your images, although most digital cameras come with minimal software. Getting into digital photography also requires a willingness to learn new stuff. How does the camera work? How do the photos compare to what I got with my old film camera? How do I print the photos to show friends? How do I store my photos to show the kids when they're grown up? Forget Everything You Know About Film Let's start with the basics. Digital photography does not require film. When you use a digital camera you no longer need to buy film or visit the one-hour photo shop to get your pictures. Your pictures are captured by the camera and saved on some kind of digital storage device. Currently, popular storage media for digital cameras are (in no particular order) SmartMedia cards, CompactFlash cards, Memory Sticks and good ole "floppy" diskettes. Since high quality digital photos presently require a half megabyte or more of storage, floppy diskettes that hold only 1.4 megabytes are quickly becoming obsolete for this purpose. Having said you no longer need to buy film, we should clarify by saying if you intend to take lots of pictures on your upcoming trip to Kathmandu, you'll need to stock up on memory. Initially, memory for your camera is more expensive than film but it can be used over and over. Fortunately, the payoff is big: cave pictures can be very dramatic and, using a few specialized techniques, allow the photographer a great deal of creativity. A few day-in, day-out troubles plague the cave photographer, whether she's using a point-and-shoot or a medium-format camera. May as well get them out in the open. Fog happens . The very first thing most photographers learn in caves is that cameras are cave moisture magnets. Out of the padded case for only seconds, many lenses could pass as bathroom mirrors after a shower. A lens tissue or cloth momentarily alleviates the problem. Better yet, warm the lens by wrapping a hand around the lens barrel or by holding a lighter flame near the glass (not too close!) for several seconds. Time also does the trick. The camera inevitably equilibrates with the cave as you near the end of your guided tour.

A camera body simply controls the speed of the shutter, while a lens determines the amount of light that falls on the film. A few quick words about the camera body. There are all types of cameras on the market right now. Some are simple, and some are so advanced that you only need to hit the button. Some even have automatic composition modes. I don't know how I feel about that! The one thing that all cameras have in common is they are nothing but light proof boxes that hold film. Unless of course you shoot digital, then your camera body plays a little more important role. But the idea is the same. I think the most important key to any camera system is to choose one that you are comfortable with. Don't let a salesperson promise you great results with the most expensive camera and lens set up. This simply will not happen. I am a firm believer that the equipment doesn't take great pictures, only the person controlling it. A camera will not give you great results on it's own, no matter how expensive it is. Like a sports car, you can't expect to have an exhilarating ride if you don't know how to drive! Great results come only from using your camera properly, and exercising good photo techniques.
