This is a bibliography of recent work in the philosophy of mind, philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and on consciousness in the sciences. It consists of 5702 entries, and is divided into six parts, each of which is further divided by topic and subtopic. Many of the entries are annotated with a brief summary. (I don't necessarily take responsibility for these annotations, many of which I wrote in the distant past.) The bibliography consists mostly of papers and books from the last few decades, with density of coverage increasing with proximity to the present. Most of the core areas of contemporary philosophy of mind are covered, but some areas (e.g. (philosophy of perception, philosophy of action, propositional attitude semantics, moral psychology) receive less coverage than others. A fuller table of contents is below. Part 6 is relatively new and is not annotated. It's not strictly "philosophy of mind", but I've put it here for convenience. Of course the division between parts is inexact. There is plenty of material by philosophers in part 6, and plenty of material by scientists in the other parts (especially parts 1, 4, and 5).

Classical problems in the area involve the relationship between the mind and the body, paradoxes concerning personal identity, and questions about the existence and nature of free will. Philosophy of mind has deep connections not only with philosophical research in metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language, philosophy of science, ethics, and the like, but also (and increasingly) with work outside philosophy in linguistics, artificial intelligence, and psychology, to name a few important examples. I hope that, by presenting some of the major questions and considering some of the proposed programs in the field, I can introduce you to the issues and whet your philosophical appetites. Years ago Ned Block defined a system known today as a Blockhead ("Troubles with Functionalism", Minnesota Studies in the Philosophy of Science ) to illustrate a problem that look-up tables pose for the Turing test. Blockhead is a "stupid" machine that stores all possible conversations within some limited duration and, thus, passes the Turing Test . This is, of course physically impossible, as Frank Tipler argues with back of the envelope calculations in The Physics of Immortality In typical philosophical fashion we suspend the laws of physics and look to conceivability and logical possibility to analyze this scenario. Given that Blockheads are logically possible, what does it say about the Turing Test? Should we not attribute intelligence to Blockhead merely because he uses brute-force methods? It is difficult to know how to respond to this. When we are trying to break a candidate program for the Turing test we ask it questions that, while coherent, have high surprisal. This is used to defeat look-up tables/canned responses, which are the hallmarks of poorly designed AI. However, in this case it is stipulated that the table has all of the possible answers, so such a strategy is useless. So, we have a system that passes the Turing Test with abhorrent methods. Is this really a problem? zombie arguments seriously and succumb to the quagmire of privileged access.

    Extractions: Functionalism may be contrasted both to behaviorism and identity theory in its account of mental events. Behaviorism defines mental events solely in relation to sensory input and behavioral output. Unfortunately, this includes any input/output device, such as a mousetrap, to which we would not want to attribute mental states. However, in addition to input and output relations, functionalism also acknowledges causal relations with other internal mental states, which mousetraps do not exhibit (such as the mental state of worry). Identity theory restricts mental events to brain activity. Functionalism, by contrast, acknowledges that mental events may be instantiated in systems or machines other than brains. There are several different types of functionalism, each based on different models; these include Turing machine functionalism, causal theory of mind, and teleological (homuncular) functionalism. Turing machine functionalism, proposed by Hilary Putnam, uses as its model a special theoretical mechanical device (the Turing machine). Most succinctly, the machine (a) receives input, (b) carries out the instructions of the input program, (c) changes its internal state, and (d) produces an appropriate output based on the input and instructions. A pop machine, for example, shows these features insofar as it has instructions on various acceptable inputs with various associated behavioral outputs. Based on this model, Putnam argues that humans are probablistic automatons.
