But after spending three weeks at the Philosophy Discovery Institute, a residential summer program for high school students, Guibert concluded that the subject can be applied practically and that it has taught her to think more clearly. "I want to build spaceships," said the 17-year-old from West Palm Beach, Fla. "In order to do that, you have to think about everything that could possibly go wrong. It's really the philosophical thought process that helps you determine how to do that." This program is consequently focused on identifying students in the fifth grade. In collaborating with these students and their families, the students and families will realize that they can reach goals that might otherwise be unattainable due to socio-economic factors. Each student will be assigned a mentor whose primary role is to guide that student to academic and social success thus fulfilling the required criteria to qualify for a post-secondary school scholarship. Mentoring : Public/Private Ventures, a public policy monitoring organization, suggests “Mentors can make a significant difference in children’s lives. Evaluation results provide clear evidence that involvement in programmatically created relationships with a caring adult can yield a wide range of tangible benefits with youth.” Mentoring serves as the chief cornerstone of the AQFK program. After a caring adult is screened and receives six hours of training, he or she meets with their mentee for approximately one hour per week. Through mentoring our students are provided a “guide on the side”, a positive role model, a support person who believes that that child is special, and has high expectations for that special child’s achievements. Mentors also serve as the anchor for our program as they are the connectors – they link our program to the children’s classroom and parents.
