[Change image] [Upload image] The history of the Philippines may be divided into four distinct phases: the pre-Spanish period (before 1521); the Spanish period (1521-1898); the American period (1898-1946); and the years since independence (1946-present). Pre-Spanish Period The first people in the Philippines the Negritos are believed to have come to the islands 30 000 years ago from Borneo and Sumatra making their way across then-existing land bridges. Subsequently people of Malay stock came from the south in successive waves the earliest by land bridges and later in boats called barangays. The Malays settled in scattered communities also called barangays which were ruled by chieftains known as datus. Chinese merchants and traders arrived and settled in the ninth century A.D. In the 14th century Arabs arrived introducing Islam in the south and extending some influence even into Luzon. The Malays however remained the dominant group until the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. Spanish Period Ferdinand Magellan claimed the Philippines for Spain in 1521 and for the next 377 years the islands were under Spanish rule. This period was the era of conversion to Roman Catholicism. A Spanish colonial social system was developed complete with a strong centralized government and considerable clerical influence. The Filipinos were restive under the Spanish and this long period was marked by numerous uprisings. The most important of these began in 1896 under the leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo and continued until the Americans defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay on May 1 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Aguinaldo declared independence from Spain on June 12 1898.

After war with Spain was declared a dozen old non-coms from other companies in the regiment were sent to those two skeleton companies to form the nucleus of a wartime organization. When I enlisted on June 18, 1898, the regiment, less companies B and H, was encamped at Camp Merritt, San Francisco. Before going to the Philippines we had target practice at the Presidio rifle range. They gave us five rounds at 100 yards. They then gave us five rounds at 300 yards and I got 48 out of a possible 50 for which good work, I was congratulated by the company commander. It seems quite pitiful to think that we had but three weeks drill and ten rounds on the rifle range before being shipped away for active service. A few days before we sailed we had some sort of funny maneuvers out at the Presidio grounds now covered by the Presidio Golf Links.

Ruy Lopez de Villalobos followed in 1543 and named the territory Filipinas after Philip II of Spain. Permanent Spanish occupation began in 1565, and by 1571 the entire country, except for the strictly Islamic Sulu archipelago, was under Spanish control. A Filipino independence movement grew in the 19th century and Filipinos fought on the side of the Americans in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. When the Spanish were defeated, General Aguinaldo declared the Philippines independent. The USA, however, had other plans, and promptly purchased the islands from the Spanish for US$20 million. The USA eventually recognised the Filipinos' desire for independence and Manuel L Quezon was sworn in as President of the Philippine Commonwealth in 1935 as part of a transitional phase pending full independence.

Warren Air Force Base here, the bronze bells are at the center of an international dispute and are emblems for rival views of American military history.    The bells are a symbol to both sides in a violent page of history from the turn of the century, known in the United States as the Balangiga Affair and in the Philippines as the Balangiga Massacre.      To Wyoming veterans, the bells are a reminder of the worst massacre of Army soldiers in the decades after Custer's defeat.    The tolling of the bells on September 28, 1901, signaled the start of a surprise attack by Filipino guerrillas that virtually wiped out an Army garrison in the village of Balangiga (pronounced bal-un-JEE-guh).    Of 74 soldiers in the unit, 45 were killed and 22 were wounded as guerrillas pressed their uprising against American rule. To Filipinos, the bells, captured in counterattack by American forces, are a reminder of reprisals in which troops were ordered to kill anyone over 10 years old, resulting in thousands of civilian deaths.     With the 100th anniversary of the Philippines' declaration of independence from Spain coming in June, the Philippines' Ambassador to the United States, Raul Chavez Rabe, has made two pilgrimages here in southeastern Wyoming, hoping to soften local public opinion.    At the recent Asia-Pacific economic conference in Vancouver, President Fidel V. Ramos of the Philippines appealed to President Clinton to return one of the bells and a copy of the other.
