The Negrito people arrived 25,000 years ago, but they were driven back by several waves of immigrants from Indonesia, followed by maritime immigrations of Malayan people. In 1380, the Arab-taught Makdum arrived in the Sulu archipelago and began to establish what became a powerful Islamic sphere of influence over the next hundred years. Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521 and claimed the archipelago for Spain. Magellan was killed by local chiefs who quite naturally disapproved of this notion. Ruy Lopez de Villalobos followed in 1543 and named the territory Filipinas after King Philip II of Spain. Permanent Spanish occupation began in 1565, and by 1571 the entire country, except for the strictly Islamic Sulu archipelago, was under Spanish control. A Filipino independence movement grew in the 19th century and Filipinos fought on the side of the Americans in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. When the Spanish were defeated, General Aguinaldo declared the Philippines independent. The USA, however, had other plans, and promptly purchased the islands from the Spanish for US$20 million. The USA eventually recognised the Filipinos' desire for independence and Manuel L Quezon was sworn in as President of the Philippine Commonwealth in 1935 as part of a transitional phase pending full independence. Japan invaded the Philippines in 1942 brutally interrupting this process and ruled until the USA re-invaded two years later. The Philippines received full independence in 1946.

Extractions: At the time of the Spanish American War, 1898, the colonial government in the Philippines was administered by a Governor-General, invariably selected in Spain. The place was used to reward crown favorites who could return home after a few years of service with enormous fortunes wrung from natives and foreign immigrants alike by a system of taxation that savored of blackmail and confiscation. The Governor-General had a junta or cabinet composed of the Archbishop of Manila, the Captain-General of the army and the Admiral of the navy stationed in the colonies. The administrative power lay with the Governor-General and the Archbishop, and the religious orders of the Spanish Catholic Church were the practical controllers, under their superiors, of the fortunes and the fate of every locality and village that Spanish power had been able to subjugate to its iron rule. From the Governor-General down to the private soldier, five years was the average length of service possible, so that the native population, estimated at from 8,000,000 to 15,000,000 in numbers, was always under the rule of transient strangers, having no continuing interest in their welfare. There have been, of course, individual instances of honorable and just governors. Among those recognized in recent times was General Blanco, who was afterwards selected to establish the weak experiment of autonomistic government in Cuba. It was, however, the rule, under the very nature of the colonial system, that temptation to oppress, rob, and enslave the natives was held out to every administration in succession, and such temptations are not long resisted by those appointed over uncivilized and ignorant people.

By the time the Portuguese voyager Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521, he found the islands to be thriving centers of commerce. Traders from India, Arabia, and China had been exchanging their wares and influencing the indigenous culture since the 10th century. Along with spices, silks, and porcelains, the traders later brought Islam. Today the majority of Mindanao is Muslim. The rest of the population might also be Muslim if Magellan had not claimed the archipelago for Spain. He spread the Christian word with such fervor and total disregard for local sensibilities that fighting broke out with the people led by chieftain Lapu-Lapu, during which Magellan was killed. Having established Manila as his capital, Legazpi defeated the Muslims on Luzon Island and enshrined Catholicism as the official religion. Baroque churches were built for centuries afterwards, Spanish culture influencing the architecture, cuisine, and education of the people. Trade strengthened with other Spanish-dominated countries such as Mexico, which exported silver.

The first was in 1521, when Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan came upon the islands during the first round-the-world voyage, but foolishly became involved in local politics and was killed by Lapu Lapu, a tribal chieftain now immortalized as the first Filipino to resist foreign rule. The islands were governed by Spain until 1898, when the nation became the only official overseas colony of the U.S., following Admiral George Dewey's victory over a Spanish fleet in Manila Bay. A U.S.-Filipino war followed the Spanish-American War and ended only when Emilio Aguinaldo, the Filipino leader, was captured by U.S. troops while in the course of negotiations. Aguinaldo did, however, extract a promise for independence by 1946 - a promise that was kept in spite of an intervening war and occupation.

A variety of political structures existed, from tribal societies to small monarchies ruled by princes. Early on, commercial links were established between the Philippines and places such as China and the East Indies. The first known European to arrive were led by the explorer Magellan in 1521 (he was actually killed there). Four decades later, the Spanish began their conquest of the region. Manila dates back to 1571 and the city quickly became an important stop for trade between the Orient and Mexico. Though the Philippines had long been Muslim, the Spanish managed to convert nearly the entire population to Christianity (except for some of the southwestern area, where Islam continued to thrive). Though the Spanish empire viewed the Philippines as important, their rule was semi-eclipsed by the Catholic Church which became both wealthy and powerful in the Philippines. Eventually, the islands passed from Spanish rule to US control (after the Spanish American War in 1898) and after the US suppressed the Philippines initial bid for independence in a bloody six-year conflict, independence was finally granted in 1946. Politically, the Philippines has faced some rocky times in the second half of the 20th century. Ferdinand Marcos became president in 1966 and proceeded to concentrate extraordinary power in that office (he also extended it to his wife, Imelda). Corruption, poverty, and general unrest worsened until Marcos was forced to flee the country in 1986. Mrs. Corazon Aquino, widow of marcos opposition leader Benito, was declared president. Her decision not to run for reelection in 1992 resulted in an election victory for Fidel Ramos. The economy of the Philippines has been strong, emerging relatively unscathed from the Asian crisis of 1997-98. In 1999, Joseph Estrada was elected president.
