    Extractions: Since the "breakthrough" of Edmund Husserl's Logical Investigations (1900-1901), the relationship between phenomenology and theology has provoked unremitting controversy and curiosity among the leading figures in phenomenological philosophy. Especially in French circles, the confrontation between philosophy and theology has long been recognized as a problem germane to phenomenological thinking, in particular to the Heideggerian transformation of Husserlian phenomenology into the thinking of Being. Levinas' importance in this respect is already well known, but the past decade has witnessed a renaissance of debate among a younger generation of French phenomenologists on the theological implications - if any - of phenomenological philosophy. One focus of this debate has been the question of "givenness" ( Gegebenheit or donation ) as the locus for a renewal of phenomenological philosophy, in particular whether the radicalization of the notion of givenness could lead to a theological turn.

    Extractions: the Paradigm and phenomenology of body he paradigm of Christ which assumes the totality of life has a strong affinity with Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology which also tries to integrate life from the stand point of what he calls 'body scheme'. Husserl's phenomenological reduction is still a reduction on the conscious level. What Merleau-Ponty aimed to attain by the reduction was to reach pre-conscious intention, which he called the operative intention. This is actually the primordial form of life's movement in the Paradigm. What is important for the Paradigm's relation to the phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty is that this phenomenological philosophy gives an epistemological ground for the Paradigm in explaining the formation of the pictorial scheme mediated by the body. The phenomenal body, on the one hand, keeps in touch with life's impulses within the body. The phenomenal body can distinguish the difference of impulses by placing them in order taking advantage of the spatial sense (of up and down, right and left, and front and back) already acquired by the objective body that twines itself around the phenomenal body. This orders the ontological feelings of pleasure or displeasure, active or passive in life's impulses corresponding to the spatial sense that belongs to the objective body. So the phenomenal body, on the other, tries to externalize and clarify the invisible impulses in the ordered form. The process in which the phenomenal body gradually reveals the principle of life's impulses contacting life as such is the transference of tacit logos to explicit logos.

    Extractions: Phenomenology and its Discontents This course examines the structure and development of Husserlian phenomenology and critical responses from later continental philosophers. Phenomenology envisaged itself, like Descartes and 20th century movements such as logical empiricism, as making a radical break with the tradition of philosophy in order to place philosophy and the sciences on a secure foundation. The battle cry, “To the things themselves,” indicates a return to the immediate givenness of phenomena, which, for Husserl , was compromised by the schools of thought prominent at the turn of the century, especially positivism, which reduces mathematics and logic to psychology or consciousness to physical entities, and historicism, which interprets all truth as relative to the historical development of different worldviews. Due to their reductionistic tendencies, these theories rule out the possibility that consciousness, ideal objects, and cultural artifacts have features that cannot be traced back to empirical facts. Husserl sets out to counter this claim through a detailed analysis of intentionality. He argues that philosophy will only become a rigorous and objective science that can provide a foundation for the other sciences when it is grounded in an adequate understanding of the necessary features of consciousness that make sense perception possible.
