Which formulation of food is best? Is my dog old enough for "adult formula"? Does my cat really need "premium"? Will Fido be healthier on "natural" food and will Fluffy fully appreciate "gourmet"? U.S. consumers spend more than $11 billion a year on cat and dog food, according to the Pet Food Institute. And pet food manufacturers compete for these dollars by trying to make their products stand out among the many types of dry, moist, and semi-moist foods available. Pet food packaging carries such descriptive words as "senior," "premium," "super-premium," "gourmet," and "natural." These terms, however, have no standard definition or regulatory meaning. But other terms do have specific meanings, and pet foods, which are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), must carry certain information on their labels. Consumers can be confident that their pets are eating a nutritionally sound food if they understand the full significance of these labels. So how can pet owners choose the right food for their pets? CVM's pet food specialist William Burkholder, D.V.M., Ph.D., recommends examining three parts of the pet food label: the life stage claim, the contact information for the manufacturer, and the list of ingredients.

However, as the animals reached adulthood, they began to age more quickly than normal and also developed chronic degenerative disease symptoms. A control group of animals raised on raw foods aged less quickly and were free of degenerative disease. In nature, we see another example of wild animals eating entirely enzyme rich raw foods being free of the degenerative diseases that afflict humans. Dr. Donald Ogden D.V.M. writes that commercial pet food (even the best known and most expensive brands) have had their nutrients altered, adulterated, devitalized and destroyed by heat, processing, coloring, preservatives and other chemicals. Feeding your animal such food on a regular basis causes waste-toxins to accumulate in the blood, lymphs and tissue which contributes to a weak immune system and renders our pet susceptible to chronic diseases. Jesse Dallas writes that Processed foods and drugs have seriously depleted the natural vitality and immune systems of many pets. Dogs and cats are anatomically very different to humans. Their intestinal tract, for example is only about half as long as a human's, and food is therefore processed and assimilated very differently. Whereas large amounts of red meat can cause cancer in humans, a lack of raw red meat in an animal's diet can lead to serious health problems.

Many of the statistics hammer home the same point: people who live in the richest fifth of nations, a.k.a. the United States and company, hog the vast majority of worldly goods: phone lines, cars, fuel, you name it. No surprises there. But as the New York Times notes, this year's UN report does juxtapose the numbers in startling ways. Here's a good one: Americans shell out $8 billion a year for cosmetics, which is $2 billion more than the estimated cost of giving everyone in the world a basic education. And another: Americans and Europeans spend $17 billion on pet food every year, $4 billion more than the additional amount needed to cover basic nutrition and health for every person on the planet. Am I saying that we need to run around dry-skinned and bare-lipped for the sake of global education? Let Fido and Fluffy fend for themselves? Of course not, and as a lipstick addict and pet owner, I'd be a hypocrite. But the UN report does seem to me to be one more piece of evidence suggesting that it's time for us to examine our addiction to stuff, not only for the sake of a more fair distribution of the planet's resources, but also for our own well-being: The report also notes that the number of Americans who described themselves as happy peaked in 1957, despite the fact that consumption in this country has more than doubled since then.

Extractions: (including a handy definition list) One pet food company advertises their food as better than others because the main ingredient in their food is poultry meat and others use feathers. But when we read the labels on all the different pet foods we can't find "feathers" listed as an ingredient in any of them. The words used on pet food labels can hide many evils. They are sometimes misunderstood, often ignored and can be confusing. To limit confusion when listing each ingredient in a food, all pet food companies should be required to also use the International Feed Number (IFN) that has been assigned to each feed grade ingredient. Then we could clearly identify the ingredients in each pet food and be able to make intelligent choices amongst them. To help you determine what may be in the pet food you are now buying, here are definitions of some words that can be found on most pet food labels today: By-product: An ingredient produced in the course of making a primary food ingredient; a secondary or incidental product. Feathers are a by-product of poultry meat processing. Feathers which are removed from a carcass during production of poultry meat are then hydrolyzed (pressure cooked with steam until they are an edible gel) which makes them an acceptable feed grade ingredient. Hydrolyzed feathers have been assigned the (IFN) International Feed Number 5-03-795 and can appear on a label as "Poultry By-products."
