Following release into the environment, pesticides may have many different fates. Pesticides which are sprayed can move through the air and may eventually end up in other parts of the environment, such as in soil or water. Pesticides which are applied directly to the soil may be washed off the soil into nearby bodies of surface water or may percolate through the soil to lower soil layers and groundwater. Pesticides which are injected into the soil may also be subject to the latter two fates. The application of pesticides directly to bodies of water for weed control, or indirectly as a result of leaching from boat paint, runoff from soil or other routes, may lead not only to build up of pesticides in water, but also may contribute to air levels through evaporation.

These processes determine a pesticide¹s persistence and movement, if any, and its ultimate fate. The fate processes can be beneficial. They can move a pesticide to the target area or destroy its potentially harmful residues. Sometimes they can be detrimental, leading to reduced control of a target pest, injury of nontarget plants and animals, and environmental damage. Of particular concern today is the movement of pesticides into groundwater. Different soil and climatic factors and different handling practices can promote or prevent each process. An understanding of the fate processes can help every pesticide applicator ensure that applications are not only effective, but are also environmentally safe. Fate processes fall into three major types: adsorption, transfer, and degradation (see Figure 1).

Extractions: Pesticides and Parkinson Disease Summary of an article in Nature: Neuroscience by Ranjita Betabet et al , December 2000 Parkinson disease (PD) is one of the more common neurological diseases, affecting 1% of the population over 65. Although the symptoms and pathology of PD have been well characterized, the underlying mechanisms and causes of the disease are still unclear. In their article Beragbet et al report that chronic, long term administration, intravenously, of rotenone, a widely used pesticide, can induce the major features of PD in rats. This remarkable observation not only provides a new animal model for the study of PD, but will reinvigorate interest in the possible role of chronic, long-term exposure to pesticides and other toxins as a cause of human PD. The cause of PD is unknown. Some cases can be attributed to genetic factors, and several mutations have recently been described that lead to familial PD. Two of these mutations are in the genes encoding the proteins parkin and ubliquitin. These mutations lead to diseases, in humans, that are somewhat distinct, both clinically and pathologically from classical PD. How they relate to classical PD is, at present, unclear. The third class of mutations, in contrast, has been more informative. These affect the gene for synuclein, a synaptic protein of unknown function that is a major component of the filaments associated with Lewy bodies. MPTP is toxin that is known to cause a PD like illness. MPTP caused a PD like illness in drug addicts who injected it intravenously. MPTP causes a PD like illness because it is converted into another compound, MPP+, which is selectively taken-up by dopamine nerve cells. MPP+ accumulates in mitochondria (the storage batteries of each cell) where it inhibits complex I (also known as the NADH de-hydrogenase) one of the enzymes involved in oxidative phosphorylation (a method of generating energy for the cell).

Extractions: 4. PESTICIDES IN THE ENVIRONMENT Transportation and Dispersion of Pesticides in Soil, Air and Water 4.1 Pesticides are released into the environment through human activities. They may contribute to point source pollution and area source pollution. A point source of pollution is a source such as an urban water collection system outfall which discharges pesticide-contaminated water at a specific location. An area source, for example, is one which discharges earth contaminated by pesticides into the aquatic environment. Agricultural area pollution is the greatest and most problematic source of pollution in aquatic environments in Canada. Once in the environment, certain pesticides break down relatively quickly, whereas others persist over longer periods of time and can accumulate or transform into contaminant by-products. In addition to movement through soil, pesticides can be mobilized by precipitation and wind. 4.2 Committee members learned from the testimony of Dr. Bernard Hill a scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Lethbridge Research Centre, that precipitation helps pesticides disperse far from their source through the natural phenomena of water evaporation and condensation. A study conducted in Alberta in 1998 showed that large quantities of the herbicide 2,4-D were found in precipitation in that region, even though that product breaks down quickly in the presence of oxygen. Researchers developed a number of hypotheses to explain this phenomenon which is specific to the Lethbridge area. They believe that the presence of pesticides in rain reflects the fact that Lethbridge farmers are among the greatest 2,4-D users in Alberta (more than 20,000 kg of 2,4-D is applied for grain production annually).
