Hill At some point in the future, agronomists will wonder how present day scientists could have continued to knowingly advocate the expansion of specialized production systems that emphasize practices such as chemically managed row-crop monocultures, which result in soil erosion and de gradation, and water exhaustion and contamination; or knowingly to stand idly by in the face of deforestation and desertification, loss of biodiversity, displacement of farmers and loss of rural communities, and increased dependence on nonrenewable resources, synthetic chemicals and antibiotics, subsidies, and markets that meet distant luxury desires versus local basic needs (Brown et al. 1984). My explanation of why this madness continues may be as shocking for the readers as witnessing the present level of degradation is for me. Throughout history we have invariably blamed others for our tragedies the gods, other nations, certain groups within society, lack of resources and power, multinationals, and political incompetencebut we have rarely examined the contribution of our own behavior, accepted our responsibilities , and set out to change our behavior . Thus my analysis of the situation is primarily psychosocial, rather than political, and that is exactly what makes such a proposition so difficult to accept, because for me this requires that I first recognize and act On my responsibilities and change myself before pointing fingers at others.

Extractions: 1. Why do we need LandCare? Land degradation and water shortages are serious environmental issues facing South Africa today. This affects each and every personthrough the economy, through the environment, through poverty in our communities and eventually our quality of life. Most of South Africa receives an irregular rainfall and a relatively dry climate. Also, much of our cropland and grazing land has deteriorated as a result of the influences of soil erosion, overgrazing, salinity, bush encroachment, alien plants and the prevailing socio-economic issues. Land degradation is costing millions of Rand each year in lost production alone. If we include treatment of degraded land and nutrient loss, research and other costs related to pollution and the silting of our waterways, the costs add up to several billion Rand a year. This is a cost that our whole community has to bear. If nothing is done, we will almost certainly face higher food costs, loss of income and loss of biological diversity. But its not all that bad. People are realising the problems and exploring solutions. Now there is a LandCare programme with dedicated people who want to change things around.

Extractions: Contributions to the Discussion UPA-PLANNING SUMMARY SESSION 3, WEEK 1 Dear participants of the UPA-Planning group, Last week's discussion started with a debate on space requirement and availability in urban settings. The original questions on how to integrate UPA in Planning processes and who are the stakeholders to be involved were only touched on at the end of this past week. Lena Jarlov is of the opinion that lower-density housing areas are needed, especially for the urban poor, so that they can grow more of their own food on their plots. Leo van den Berg reacted to this by saying that we should not aim with UPA at most of the urban poor producing most of their food around their homes. That would make the urban infrastructure far too expensive. A better way to enable those urban poor (and others!) who have the relevant skills and/or commitment to do agriculture is to plan and build new urban neighbourhoods in strings, following wherever possible the slightly higher grounds, leaving "green corridors" between them for agricultural production, forestry, water conservation, sport fields, etc. This is the well-known urban planning model of "fingercity".
