Extractions: Date sent: 19 March 1999 (via New Crops LISTSERV) Jack bean is grown as a cover crop by small farmers in many sustainable agriculture programs. I know of several groups working with Jack bean in Nicaragua and suspect that it is also used in many other Latin American countries as well as Africa and Asia. The Nicaragua groups could not produce enough seed for their own needs when I was last there in 1996, but that situation might have changed by now. I believe that the Nicaragua programs obtained seed from Honduras to get their programs started. I have advised my contact in Nicaragua of your interest just in case they are not on the New Crops LISTSERV. If they have seed available, or know of a source, I suspect that they will contact you directly. Robert N. Mowbray
Green Party - Real Progress AG204 Various methods of growing more sustainably and organically are being pioneered; in particular permaculture, agroforestry, forest gardening and perennial http://policy.greenparty.org.uk/mfss/agric.html
Extractions: The GP's aim is to create an ecologically sustainable and fair society. Our agriculture policy seeks to pursue this aim with respect to the production of food and other agriculturally derived products. In stating this policy we acknowledge that the soil is the basis of wealth upon which all land-based life depends and that "sustainable" must be understood in a holistic, earth-wide context. We recognise the fundamental importance of those who work on the land. The Agriculture policy cannot be taken in isolation from other policies; in particular it relates very closely to the forestry, food, land and countryside sections and also the sections on animal rights, economy, energy, the marine environment and others. It is related to the population policy in that we need to balance our ways of obtaining resources for living with population and productivity of the land; there must be an optimum population whose needs can be met sustainably from our land resources. Current industrialised, intensive farming methods of agriculture are not sustainable in that they:

Undergraduate This is an applied degree focused on the development of analytical, quantitative, computing and communication skills, emphasising teaching and research based on sustainable horticultural practices. Research skills, which are highly regarded by employers are gained in fourth year through the completion of a research thesis. In the first two years of the degree you will undertake core units designed to provide a broad science-based training combined with a basic overview of horticultural science. In third year you will undertake options in postharvest technology and production and marketing of fruit, vegetables, cut flowers and nursery stock, and a range of elective units appropriate for progression to your fourth-year major in horticultural science. The fourth-year specialisation includes units of study in production horticulture, urban horticulture, and postharvest biology, together with a research project in an area of your choice related to horticulture. Some have planned activities, others are excursions, incursions, and information sources such as books, online pages and so on. We have also had a look at most of these and added our own comment on what the resource consists of and how it could be used. There are constant changes in availability of the resources and development of new resources so you may find some difficult to get hold of or discover new resources that we have not included here. We would be very interested in hearing about these changes from you and will update this list when necessary 'Our Bushland Classroom'. 2000. There is information linking the activities directly into the curriculum framework, with teachers' notes, programming sheets, lists of incursions and excursions as well as lists of other resources. While focusing on the bush lands there are also water-based activities. This resource has been tested at Noranda Primary School 'DO Something - Environmental Education in Action in Primary Schools'

Extractions: AGRICULTURE 121 INTRODUCTION TO ECOLOGICAL AGRICULTURE Rationale The development and subsequent adoption of modern agricultural practices have brought about considerable increases in yields in both crops and animals. Alongside with these benefits however, were the undermining of the ancient traditions and cultures associated with agriculture. In some instances, some practices have caused destruction of the natural resource base. It has aggravated environmental degradation to the point where agricultural production has been seriously impaired. In response to the changing situations in agricultural environment both here and abroad, a different approach to agricultural production is imperative. The call of the time requires agricultural practices that conserve and regenerate the ecosystems, enhance the quality of the environment, and seek wider social, economic, and political participation in farming communities. Incidentally, these are the features of agriculture for long-term sustainability. Fortunately, information and experiences about ecological agriculture practices are plenty. The offering of an undergraduate course in the current B.S.A. degree program that would lay the foundation and scientific basis of ecological agriculture practices is necessary. There is a great need for trained manpower that will address the various aspects of the transition, promotion, and institutionalization stage of ecological agriculture.

This course shall focus on the study and analysis of the scientific bases as well as the issues and concerns of ecological agriculture practices. It will attempt to probe on the different barriers (and their interrelationships) towards an accelerated dissemination and promotion of ecological agricultural practices in the Philippines. There is also a need to conduct a more in depth study on the scientific aspects of ecological agriculture to address the demand for high yields on a sustainable basis. I. The oxen handler is responsible for the work done by the oxen and for their welfare. The working day should begin early in tropical countries, to make use of the coolest hours. The working hours in Africa are normally between 6-11 in the morning. The handler must exercise patience and sympathy towards the oxen, not overworking them when tired.
Extractions: Kerr Center Publ. F2000 Agroforestry is the deliberate integration, in space or time, of woody perennials with herbaceous crops and/or animals on the same land management unit (Steppler and Nair, 1987, p. 265). This can be simplified to the practice of growing trees with agricultural crops and/or livestock on the same piece of land (Anderson, et al., 1991). For agroforestry practices to be widely accepted and integrated into existing agricultural enterprises, farmers must be able to accomplish them safely, efficiently, and with tools already available on the farm. Agroforestry practices must be friendly to the farmer, budget, and land. Many tree species are used in a variety of shapes, forms, and configurations and produce benefits as agroforestry components to adjacent crops or livestock. Trees provide many benefits including lumber and forest products; shade and wind protection for crops, livestock, and buildings; erosion control; water and nutrient cycling; and wildlife food and habitat. Windbreaks are not a new idea. The planting of windbreaks has a long and successful history in this country. Between 1934 and 1943, as part of a conservation program conceived and vigorously promoted by Franklin D. Roosevelt, about 19,000 miles of windbreaks were planted on 33,000 farms and ranches for soil and water conservation.
