Extractions: Pentominoes are shapes that use five square blocks joined edge to edge to form various combinations. There are twelve possible shapes in a set of unique pentominoes, named T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z, F, I, L, P, and N. An easy way to remember all the letters in a pentominoes set is to look at the word, FILiPiNo, and remember the end of the alphabet, TUVWXYZ. Pentominoes are said to have been "invented" by Solomon W. Golomb in 1953 at a talk he gave to the Harvard Mathematics Club. Although he came up with the name, pentominoes have been around since a much earlier time. The first pentomino problem, written by the great English inventor of puzzles, Henry Ernest Dudeny, was published in 1907 in the Canterbury Puzzles. The twelve pentominoes are often referred to by the letters they resemble. There are about as many puzzles and games using pentominoes as there are people who play with them. Here are a few examples. There are many more puzzles and solutions all over the internet and in the book Polyominoes by Solomon Golomb.

The other application is to predict the outcome of certain problems based on given data with the Math Mania Math Solver. Math Mania is full of useful information to help one learn the language of mathematics. This site incorporates the principles of math and presents them using a collection of math lessons. These math lessons are assisted by a mailing list, a message board, and chat. These tools provide an interactive line of communication between Math Mania and the online users. Math Mania also includes an online search and sitemap to allow users to quickly navigate the site and find desired information. With Math Mania, we hope users will develop a greater appreciation for math and a greater knowledge of math and its applications. Geometrical Page Looking at his work inspired me to do some geometry themed art myself. I later, whilst looking at book called pentominoes while i was doing maths at university http://web.ukonline.co.uk/william.labbett/art_files/geometry_page_1_htm.htm
Extractions: This is the first page of pictures i have done of a geometrical nature. I've found shapes 2D and 3D very enjoyable to play with and explore since i was little. When i was about 20 i discovered MC Escher, the master of tesselations and implausible worlds. Looking at his work inspired me to do some geometry themed art myself. Here's some of the work i've done: This picture has a long history. It was originally a little painting about 8cm square. It was painted with gouache and with many more colourst. It was painted roughly during the summer of 1993. I decided to simplify the colour scheme and added the background (10 years later). The single shape which tesselates to make the incomplete circle i discovered myself - i was playing around with shapes because i wanted to do a tesselation. I later, whilst looking at book called Pentominoes while i was doing maths at university, found out that this particular shape is officialy known as a 14-ominoe. The background is also my own invention i'm somewhat proud to say. It is a tesselation of 11 different 11-ominoes. Check out http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/symmetry/polypoly.htm
Pentominoes -- LEGO LEGO + geometry. My first LEGO puzzle (I expect there to be many more) is a recreation of the classic pentominoes Pieces Puzzle. http://www.ericharshbarger.org/lego/pentominoes.html
Extractions: Besides my fascination with LEGO bricks, I have many other hobbies and interests. One such pasttime has been crafting puzzles, games, and brainteasers of various sorts. Often I craft the necessary pieces out of wood, but other times I make use of whatever is available (local school supply shops love me because I'm always buying tokens, dice, letter tiles, marbles and the like). It finally sunk in recently that for rectagular pieces that need to be fashioned with high precision, LEGO bricks would be a fine material with which to work. My first 'LEGO puzzle' (I expect there to be many more) is a recreation of the classic Pentominoes Pieces Puzzle. A 'pentomino' is a geometric shape formed by the edge-to-edge joining of five unit squares. There are twelve such unique pieces (not including reflected images). With twelve pieces at five squares each, this creates pieces which cover an area of sixty units (12 X 5 == 60). Thus, one challenge is to try to fit the pieces into a perfect rectangle of given dimensions; say, a 6 x 10 rectangle. Much more can be discussed about the mathematical properties of pentominoes (see below for related links). The challenge I posed for myself was to build twelve such pentominoes out of LEGO bricks and plates and tiles, and a tray into which to place them.

Pentomino Puzzle Game Lets You Create Geometric Puzzles. Arranging pentominoes in various shapes and designs teaches geometry students about the basic geometric transformations slides, rotations, and reflections. http://www.virtu-software.com/products/PentoMania.asp
Extractions: Now that same capability has been brought to the computer with Virtu Software's first educational software release: PentoMania. Not only can students solve pre-existing pentomino puzzles (such as the one shown here), but they can use the 'edit mode' to design their own puzzles. They will quickly discover that creating their own puzzles is just as challenging as solving someone else's, and just as much fun.
