Extractions: Contents The early schools of the county have been adverted to in other parts of this volume, and we shall endeavor to avoid repetitions. The first settlers were sturdy and industrious pioneers, but they brought with them from their former homes ideas of progress and culture, and within a year from the time the first community was fairly settled in the new forest home, a school-house was erected, and in 1803 Gabriel Glenn was duly installed therein as teacher. This was within the territory now embraced in Clarion township. Other settlements followed, and with equal promptitude school-house and place of worship were provided, sometimes in the same building, though not unfrequently the school was held in the house of some settler, where the children of the community could learn the rudiments of an English education. Schools were established in the territory now included in the townships of Beaver, Elk, Farmington, Licking, Limestone, Madison, Monroe, Paint, and Toby between 1805 and 1815. The first school-house in Richland township was erected about 1817 or 1818. The

Parochial Schools: Out of Cities, Into the Suburbs PHILADELPHIA Suburban waiting lists In Arlington, Va., the waiting list for the elementary schools runs into the thousands. In the Minneapolis suburbs, the archdiocese is building a major building every year, and still can't keep up with the demand. The growing enrollment may seem good, but the flood of students presents many problems. At Our Lady of Mercy, the parish set up trailers to house the extra students until it built a $4 million addition this year. But the school is still overfilled. "Parents complain about the class size, which is about 34," says Sister Virginia Pfan, the school principal. "We just don't have room for anyone else." The schools' popularity doesn't always stem from good facilities. Few schools offer computers in the classroom and many work with vintage science equipment. Students still sit in silent rows, and the schools stress that education is a result of individual effort.

Extractions: Website: www.pabar.org CELEBRATE STUDENTS: JUDGES AND LAWYERS GO BACK TO SCHOOL Activity Summary: The Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Temple University Beasley School of Law developed the Lesson Plan and Idea Guide for K-12 Classrooms to help educators, judges and lawyers bring the law to life for students. The guide includes law-related lesson plans for all grade levels, ready-to-copy handouts and useful information resources for educators. It is tied to the state Academic Standards for Civics and Government, with lesson plans correlated to specific standards. To make it easier for lawyers and schools to participate in Law Day 2000 and receive materials, the PBA established a toll-free hotline that matched callers to county bar activities. Activity Narrative: Beginning May 1 with statewide kick-off events and continuing through May 5, the Law Week 2000 celebration included over 1,000 judges and lawyers, who visited hundreds of Pennsylvania K-12 public, private and parochial schools. Designed by our Law Day 2000 Committee, which was composed of judges, lawyers and county bar executive directors, our Law Day 2000 celebration focused on getting judges and lawyers in as many classrooms as possible during the first week of May. Our goal was to educate children about their legal rights and responsibilities in the new millennium and draw attention to the law in a fun and informative manner. We also worked to help teachers recognize the need to continue law-related educational efforts in the future.
