In 1681, when King Charles II granted William Penn, a Quaker, the vast tract of land that includes present-day Pennsylvania, the grant had strings attached: Penn was required to repay the king by sending him two beaver pelts a year! P enn and the Quakers found refuge from religious persecution here, and the land became a haven for others too, including Mennonites and Amish. Primarily of German descent, these "Pennsylvania Dutch" settled in and around Lancaster County. Adhering to a simple way of life, the Pennsylvania Dutch still live in the state's tranquil farmland settings, shunning many of the conveniences of modern America in favor of slower, more peaceful ways. It is common to see a plodding horse and buggy on the state's country roads, driven by plainly-dressed people living a simpler, slower way of life. P ennsylvania welcomes visitors with open arms, and boasts that over 5 million tourists a year come to the peaceful Lancaster County area to partake of a more relaxed lifestyle, beautiful landscapes, and charmingly hospitable people.

Like many other western Pennsylvania counties, Butler County was named for a Revolutionary War hero, General Richard Butler. The county seat, the Borough of Butler, was laid out in 1803, and on April 2, 1803, the county was formally organized for judicial purposes. The official boundaries of Butler were defined in 1800 as follows: Beginning at a locust tree on the south side of Buffalo Creek (near Freeport), thence along the Allegheny line due west 23 miles, thence due north 23 miles, then north 35 degrees east 15 miles, then east to the Allegheny River, thence due south to the place of beginning. Thus, the shape of Butler County is a rectangle (33 miles NS by 23 miles EW) with north-western corner removed diagonally. The boundaries of Butler County, in contrast to many other Pennsylvania counties, have remained unchanged from its creation to the present. Butler County is bordered by eight other Pennsylvania counties: Allegheny County on the entire southern border

The Appalachian Plateau stretches across the western and northern sections of Pennsylvania and covers more than half the area of the state. The Allegheny Mts. line the eastern edge of the plateau and run southwest to northeast, overlooking the Great Appalachian Valley. The Jacks, Tuscarora, and Blue Mts. comprise a ridge and valley section bordered by the Great Appalachian Valley to the southeast and east. The Piedmont Plateau gives way to the Atlantic Coastal Plain in the extreme southeastern portion of the state. In the east Pennsylvania is drained by the Delaware and the Susquehanna river systems; in the west by the Allegheny and the Monongahela rivers, which join at Pittsburgh to form the Ohio River; and in the central part by the West Branch of the Susquehanna, which crosses the state and empties into Chesapeake Bay. These turbulent streams and rivers have cut beautiful water gaps, natural passageways for roads and rail lines. The great forests and lush vegetation that once covered the entire state were transformed during the Carboniferous period into deposits of anthracite coal in the northeast and extensive bituminous beds in the west. Large areas of woodland remain and, in some isolated sections, have retained an almost primitive wildness. Of the many historic sites and parks that have been preserved, those under federal ownership include Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Gettysburg National Military Park, and Independence and Valley Forge national historical parks (see
