After School Initiative The City of Philadelphia has recognized the importance of providing our young people with safe things to do in the hours after school. United Way is helping by serving as an intermediary in Philadelphia's $3 million After School Initiative. There are now 31 nonprofit organizations, in under-served areas, involved in the program, including churches, civic associations, numerous grassroots agencies, and more conventional organizations. The goal is to make sure our children have structure, role models, and a secure place to spend the hours between the end of the school day and when their parents are finished work. Back to Top Center for Youth Development Established in 1998, the Center for Youth Development (CYD) is an initiative of United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania that serves as a regional training, technical assistance, and resource unit to help public and private providers of out-of-school time programs assess and improve the quality of their programs. CYD also seeks to help the general public, funders, and public policy leaders understand and appreciate the set of youth development principles that underpin all effective youth activities. Community education strategies, include providing information about youth services, model programs, program outcomes, standards, and best practices through a website, quarterly newsletter, annual conference, speaker's bureau, and a resource lending library.
