Botswana Pen Pal Program system in math, and environmental science for science. They included pictures of themselvesand families. Students produced letters to pen pals, pictures, and http://edweb.sdsu.edu/courses/EDTEC596/Project1/BotswanaPenPal.html
Extractions: This unit was developed by Debra Hake and Julie Garrett and delivered to 26 6th graders at O'Farrell Community School this school year. The unit significantly involved social studies, language arts, and to a lesser extent math and environmental science. Revolving around a pen pal program developed by Ms. Hake in San Diego, Ca. and Julie Garrett, a Peace Corps volunteer in Botswana, Africa, students in San Diego ranging from 11 to 12 years old, wrote to students in Botswana, Africa ranging from 12-15 years old. These letters introduce students to different cultures for social studies, writing and reading skills in language arts, the metric system in math, and environmental science for science. Originated over the summer, Ms. Garrett contacted a school in Botswana, Africa, while doing her Peace Corps work on a game reserve in Gabarone. Because the school year in Botswana begins in January, the first letters were written by students in San Diego. The return letters were received in February. The writing and reading of letters were done in a half hour projects time with the same group of 26 children. All from the same homebase. The letters are an on-going year long project, dragged out by the international mail system. Introduction to Botswana through geography and discussion.

Yet, most parents have no training. No one can MAKE a child eat, sleep, listen or go potty! Kids are kids. No wonder parents are so often frustrated. These four steps can help you avoid the frustration-to-anger trap. 1. Stop, separate and breathe. This is a crucial first step. Actually saying: "STOP! Im getting angry!" to yourself and the child can be very effective. Take a few deep breaths or do a mundane chore. Taking your mind off the problem for a few minutes can help you gain control of your emotions.

Extractions: Omneya al-Naggar is an Egyptian school teacher in the Northern city of Alexandria. Orly Noy is an Israeli journalist of Iranian origin, living and working in Jerusalem. They are both working mothers, but their worlds are divided by hostility, politics, culture and religion. BBC Arabic.com has asked Omneya and Orly to exchange their views, via e-mail, on life, the prospects for Middle East peace and everything. Read the exchanges and send us your comments. Hi Omneya, I guess it is as strange for you to receive a letter from a total stranger, as it is for me to write one. Maybe the best thing to do is start with the basic facts. My name is Orly, I'm 33 years old, married with two little girls, ages four and a half and one. I live in Jerusalem, and work as a producer at a new Israeli-Palestinian radio station which will go on air in about three weeks. I am also studying for my second degree in Middle East studies at the Hebrew University. As I write this letter it occurs to me how weird it is that two geographical neighbours like us would never have known about each other without the intervention of a third, distant party.

Universal Letter Writing Week celebrates letter writing and encourages everyone to put pen to paper and create a memento for someone special. Universal Letter Writing Week, January 7-14 , is a great time to get back into the swing of good old fashioned letter writing. After all, there's nothing more cherished than a letter, written in a loved one's own hand, that you can keep forever and ever. Universal Letter Writing Week Activity 1 for Kids: Pen Pal Exchange Your kids are now ready for the next step. Once you have written a letter, you will have to mail it. Mailing a letter is the way the letter gets from you to the person you wrote to. Before you can mail your letter, you will need an envelope to put it in. You will also need a stamp. The stamp represents the amount of money it costs to mail the letter. The cost of a first class domestic stamp - the kind you need to mail a regular letter within the United States - has just gone up from 32¢ to 33¢.
