Home ec was once considered an easy elective where mostly female students baked and sewed. Now it has a new name: family and consumer science. And students learn about a lot more: parenting roles, relationships, pregnancy, nutrition, budgeting and job seeking. At East Rowan, 500 students have signed up for one or more of nine courses in family and consumer science. Roughly one in four is male. When Judy Carden started teaching about 30 years ago, nutrition was discussed only for six weeks as part of a course on home economics. Now she teaches yearlong courses in foods and nutrition.
