In them, not only typical biotopes, but also the most valuable and unique Finnish biotopes are protected. There are already more than thirty national parks in Finland. The primary purpose of national parks is to safeguard the diversity of Finnish nature. When establishing national parks, attention has also been paid to the protection of natural sights and Finnish history. The parks feature rapids, canyons and esker formations, spectacular scenery, and panoramic views. Old dwellings and cultural landscapes, like regenerated slashed and burned forests, meadows once used for grazing, and natural meadows, resulting from human impact are also preserved in the national parks.
