Extractions: Adopt-A-Road In November, 1992, the Pierce County Council adopted a resolution creating the Pierce County Adopt-A-Road roadside litter control program. Today, approximately 100 organizations participate in the program in partnership with the County to monitor and remover litter from County roads. Each group commits to a minimum of four litter pickups per year, covering a minimum of two miles of roadway. These organizations currently monitor and remover litter on 300+ miles of unincorporated Pierce County roadways, saving valuable taxpayer monies, and maintaining the scenic, healthy living environment the Pacific Northwest is noted for. For: Adults The Cascade Land Conservancy (CLC) is a regional land trust serving the counties of King, Snohomish and Pierce (east of Narrows Bridge). As a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, CLC works to preserve our natural resources and open space heritage for generations to come. Conservation easements and property titles are transferred to the land trust by willing landholders, benefiting both the property owner and the community at large. The property owner gains tax relief in some cases, while natural, scenic, and historic sites are maintained in perpetuity for the enjoyment of all. In the process, our forests and farmlands, prairies and wildlife habitat, sensitive stream corridors and wetland systems continue to add to the vitality of the Central Puget Sound region.

Extractions: Baird's Tapir Conservation in Costa Rica ZCOG Coordinates Volunteer Effort to Assist Tapir Research Dr. Roberto Aguilar and Dan Hilliard assist in applying a radio collar to a Bairds tapir Sirena, Costa Rica: With a hammer in his left hand, a mouthful of nails, and his legs wrapped tightly around the young espavel (Anacardium excelsum) wildlife biologist Charles Foerster slowly surveys the rainforest floor from thirty feet above. "This spot looks promising" he mumbles dropping two of the half dozen nails lodged between his gums. "Plenty of fresh tracks, enough open space for a clear dart shot, and safe a distance from the river; a perfect tapir capture site." Eager to build on an unbelievable streak of capturing and radio collaring four Baird's tapirs within the first four days of arrival at the research site, we quickly gathered our gear and began erecting yet another wooden observation platform high above the leaf-littered forest floor. Author's Field Notes , July 5, 1997 Costa Rica's Corcovado National Park encompasses approximately 47,000 hectares of primary and secondary forest and represents the largest remaining tract of lowland tropical rainforest in Central America.
Masterplan Aquatic plants in glassfronted aquariums (so that space, and enhancements to the South Park Arboretum bordering shown in beige below) (Formal gardens are in http://www.buffalogardens.com/masterplan/body_masterplan.html
Extractions: Statement by Kathryn O'Donnell, Society Volunteer President The updated Master Plan was developed by Flynn Battaglia Architects from Buffalo, NY, who also worked on the renovation of the Main Dome, LANDSCAPES Landscape Architecture* Planning* Historical Preservation, from Vermont, a firm that has worked on Olmsted Parks nationally as well as locally on South Park's Master Plan, MLK Park, etc. and Richard Baer and Associates for costing with input from Society Board, Task Force, volunteers and county staff. The proposed plan calls for an investment of ~$20 million dollars over a period of 10-15 years, in capital improvements, new exhibits, and outdoor gardens. As the first step in the process, the Society Board with the County staff will complete a strategic plan and business plan for the facility as well as a development plan to determine potential funding sources. The plan embodies the Society's mission to make the gardens a home for fun, interactive, lifelong learning about plants and their role in our world. The inspiration is our successful hands-on plant science programs for local schools. The plan re-integrates the Botanical Gardens into South Park as Olmsted envisioned. The botanical gardens were designed to be a showcase for tropical plant species while the rest of the park was designed to be a showcase for the more hardy temperate species. The formal gardens around the conservatory were designed to lead visitors into the more informal park. This plan helps restore this arrangement.
