Boon) INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: PURPOSE AND CONTENT This course investigates the human propensity to objectify and re-present the natural world. We will investigate and critique presentations of Nature in such institutions as botanic gardens, zoos, marine parks, aquariums, museums, safari parks, National Parks, and Wildlife Refuges. We will attempt to answer some basic questions concerning the construction, presentation, and interpretation of Nature: Why are there museums? How are they organized, and what role do they play in society? How is Nature presented in such contexts? What options are there for new interpretations of the natural world? This course explores the origins, histories, statuses, and display techniques of institutions that exhibit Nature. Pataki today announced 65 grants totaling $771,907 to organizations in New York City and Westchester County that encourage community involvement in environmental protection and education. The grants, supported by the New York City Environmental Fund, will help organizations promote active community stewardship of urban shorelines, waterways, parklands, and open spaces. "By working together to protect our State's environment, our efforts can have a significant and lasting impact for all New Yorkers," Governor Pataki said. "These important projects will help educate urban communities about their surroundings and promote the conservation of precious natural resources throughout the metro region." New York City Environmental Fund projects foster restoration, care and public enjoyment of natural resources in New York City and designated parts of Westchester County. Prior to today's announcement, the Environmental Fund has supported more than 300 projects. Award recipients include schools, education groups, museums, government agencies, aquariums, and botanical gardens, among other community organizations, and will each receive between $5,000 and $35,000. The grants are administered by the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Hudson River Foundation.
