It's the story of a movement that knows no limits, no confines, no boundaries, only ever-expanding possibilities. Of course, the Paralympic Games weren't always the peak of elite competition, weren't always the world's largest sports event after the Olympics, weren't always the fastest-growing movement in international sports. But they were always, even before the first Olympic-style competition for athletes with disabilities debuted in 1960, infused with the Paralympic spirit. That Paralympic spirit can be traced to 1948 when Sir Ludwig Guttmann, a German-born neurosurgeon who emigrated to England in 1939 as a refugee from Nazi occupation, organized an athletic competition in Stoke Mandeville for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries. Four years earlier, at the British government's request to open Stoke Mandeville Hospital's National Spinal Injury Centre, mainly to treat wounded servicemen, Dr. Guttmann had introduced a new medical approach embracing sport as a paramount therapy in the total rehabilitation of paralyzed patients. What began as rehabilitative recreation evolved into athletic competition-with Guttmann emerging as "The Father of Disabled Sport."

Sports Massage at the 2004 Athens Olympics: My Olympic sports massage experience began 1n 1994. While walking with my then 8 year-old daughter, Alana, through the Springtime Tallahassee Festival, we came upon a table that displayed the logo of the British Olympic Association (BOA). We quickly learned that we could buy a brick that would be added to a commemorative walkway at the Tallahassee City Hall in support of bringing the British Olympians to Tallahassee to train for the 1996 Atlanta Olympiad. Alana decided that she wanted to buy a brick from her piggy-bank savings and I decided that the CORE Institute should do the same. While we were filling out the paperwork I mentioned to Christopher Campbell, the local coordinator of the BOA, that I owned the CORE Institute and would be happy to meet with British Olympic officials about offering sports massage during the preparation camps that were scheduled for the summer of 1995 and the spring and summer of 1996. Christopher seemed pleased and promised me that he would pass along my business card to British team doctors who would visit later that year. Exactly six months later I attended a group meeting with the BOA medical team, local medical groups, and athletic administrators from Florida State University. At that meeting it was decided that the CORE Institute would support the camps with sports massage 12 hours a day, seven days a week. I also learned that we would need to staff the team with qualified sports massage therapists, not massage therapy students like I had envisioned.
