Crandon Mine Owner Suffering Global Turmoil government will absolve BHP from all future liability for the environmental damage caused by the mine. BHP owes a lot more than that to the papau, new guinea http://www.wsn.org/mining/BHPproblems.html
Extractions: Global Turmoil What kind of neighbor would they make here? - more on mining As DNR hearings loom on the proposed Crandon mine, its owner finds itself embroiled in controversy from poor environmental practices and labor conduct at its mining operations outside the U.S. The events may raise questions about what type of neighbor and citizen BHP-Billiton (based in London) would make in Wisconsin. In Papau, New Guinea, a group of children, women and landowners have blockaded BHP-Billiton's OK Tedi Mine . The group has blocked access to a bridge leading into the mine, effectively shutting the mine down. The protesters are upset by the massive pollution released from BHP's copper mine and the devastation it has caused to their drinking water, fishing, and forests upon which they rely. Each day, the company dumps 80,000 tons of waste into the Tedi River. The river and forest surrounding it are dying from the pollution. Rather than clean up its act, BHP is instead seeking a legislative bail-out. The company has approached the government with an offer: In return for divesting itself of the mine, the government will absolve BHP from all future liability for the environmental damage caused by the mine.

Extractions: NGG BUSINESS PLAN FEBRUARY 2004 The Company has interests in ten exploration projects and three possible near term development projects. These development projects are the Sinivit, Normanby (Imwauna Project), Sehulea (Weioko Project) properties, and the Mt Penck exploration project, form the Company's core projects. These properties are described below, or in the Business Plan 2003. Directors consider that, although all the Company's properties have high potential for major mineral discoveries, it is impractical for New Guinea Gold to attempt to explore all properties, largely because of the adverse impact this would have on the number of issued shares. The Company's only means of obtaining exploration capital at this time is by issuing new shares or by joint venture. In December 2003, the Company acquired interests, via the acquisition of a 50% interest in Kanon Resources Limited, in five new properties (included in 13 above) in Papua New Guinea. The remaining 50% interest is held by Vangold Resources Ltd. Some of the better results from each property are summarised below. Property

Extractions: Bougainville is the main island of the North Solomons group which, as the name implies, is not related geographically or ethnically to the rest of the islands of Papua New Guinea; and so, the inclusion of the the North Solomons as a province of PNG might be characterized as a colonial "accident". The international boundary with the Solomons is just a stone's throw off the southeast coast of Bougainville Island. Here's a backgrounder to the origins of Radio Free Bougainville, which I should think, regardless of one's sympathies, must properly be considered a clandestine operation at this time: "IARN GETS MEDICINE TO BOUGAINVILLE THROUGH NEW GUINEA BLOCKADE" Bougainville is a 130-mile long island with 160,000 citizens, northeast of Australia, between Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Bougainville was so named by the French Explorer Louis de Bougainville who first sighted the island in 1768. It was later annexed by the German New Guinea Company as part of their holdings. After the defeat of Germany in the First World War, the German territories, collectively termed New Guinea, became a part of the League of Nations Mandate and were placed under Australian administration. At this stage, Bougainville's leaders began to speak out against being held as a separate entity from their traditional brothers in the Solomons.

Extractions: News From Vangold's Papua New Guinea Properties Paul the Benjaminite It has taken a quite a bit longer than expected, but the news of the surveys on Vangold's (75%) and New Guinea Gold's (25%) Feni Island properties is finally out. The incredible potential of the Feni Islands (Ambitle Island) was previously reported on in The Bluest of Blue Sky Potential and in More Bright Blue Skies Over Feni . These reports explained the combination of geological circumstances which could mean that Ambitle Island will turn out to be one of the largest gold deposits in the world, like its sister island, Lihir. But the news is not limited to Vangold's Feni Islands Property! The recent acquisition of Kanon Resources means that Vangold and New Guinea Gold now have a share in seven exciting and prospective land packages in Papua New Guinea. Three drilling programs will be in the news within the next few months on three of these properties with the drills turning first, on the Ambitle Island and Mt. Penck properties, both scheduled to begin within weeks! Ambitle Island Exploration Results As expected, the results from the exploration of the central and southern portions of Ambitle Island have yielded impressive results. Both the biogeochemical survey and the stream panned concentrate surveys were conducted in portions of the "Central Caldera" and the "Old Caldera Zone" on Ambitle Island. (Both "calderas" are actually volcanic craters.)

International Business Is Booming For Small U.S. Arms Dealers But last summer the government purchased enough equipment to outfit a small that the weapons and the gear were destined for rebels in nearby papau, new guinea. http://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/smallarm.htm
Extractions: The Solomon Islands, a tiny country in the Pacific with a population of 400,000, has no army and a police force of barely a thousand including traffic cops. But last summer the government purchased enough equipment to outfit a small combat unit including assault rifles, machine guns, helmets, boots and two small airplanes from a U.S. company. At the Pentagon and the U.S. Customs Service, officials expressed misgivings about the sale, fearing that the weapons and the gear were destined for rebels in nearby Papau, New Guinea. Others argued that it would be better for the Solomon Islands to invest in health and education. Australia and New Zealand also opposed the deal, believing it was irresponsible to be bringing more weapons into the region. But the State Department accepted that the arms were necessary for the police and issued the necessary licenses. Since then, a newly elected government in the Solomon Islands, suspicious about the motives for the arms deal, has launched an investigation and tried to cancel it. While the sale to the Solomon Islands is military peanuts only $3.4 million it offers a window into the workings of the small arms trade which has equipped terrorist organizations and civil wars from Afghanistan to Rwanda. Within the U.S. government, arguments that such sales might fuel an ethnic conflict, or go to a government with a poor human rights record, are routinely drowned out by arguments that the deal will be good for U.S. business and improve relations with other countries, U. S. officials say.

Sunday June 8, 2003 Dear Friends, Its Sunday night in Papua New Guinea and we have had a much-needed day of worship and rest as we prepare for the exciting week ahead. We were picked up at the hotel this morning and taken to the Wigani Bible Church. This is the same church I was privileged to attend over a year ago when we announced that the radio station in Port Moresby would finally be "signed-on" to begin broadcasting. I will never forget the thrilling roar of a cheer, which erupted from the nearly 1,000 congregants that day! Now, what a delight it was to be back worshiping with those same people now that "Wantok Radio Light" has been on the air almost 16 months. It was so fulfilling to hear the music minister share with the congregation that just this past week he learned an important truth about Christian joy on " Back To The Bible ", the daily radio ministry enjoyed by so many of us in the United States. (Photo below) Because of this first Christian radio station here in PNG, they too can enjoy the daily spiritual influence of great programs and music.

Extractions: Australia Briony Stocker The Papua New Guinea government has offered to take a one million kina cut (US$720,000) in foreign aid from Australia over the next five years in a bid to help save the threatened overseas service Radio Australia. In a letter sent to the Australian High Commissioner David Irvine on 5 February, Prime Minister Julius Chan said that Papua New Guinea would be left 'considerably worse off' by the closure of Radio Australia. 'Papau New Guinea as a developing nation and a regional focal point has come to depend on Radio Australia as a representative of excellency in broadcasting,' wrote Chan. The leader of the East Timorese independence movement and joint winner of the 1996 Nobel peace prize, Jose Ramos Horta, has also added his support to maintaining the Radio Australia service. Horta estimates that more than 30 million Indonesians listen to the station each day. Radio Australia has been operating since 1939, providing independent news broadcasts in such politically sensitive areas as Fiji, Burma, East Timor and Bougainville. A January 1997 report by businessman Bob Mansfield into the running of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), however, recommended the closure of the station in order to generate savings of US$19 million. With the overwhelming majority of Australians resisting sponsorship and advertising on ABC, the Mansfield Report recommended the network should be released from its international responsibilities to concentrate on providing domestic free-to-air broadcasting services.

It is the last of a string of islands spilling down from South-East Asia into the Pacific and could be said to form a transition zone between the two areas. PNG occupies the eastern end of the island of New Guinea. In addition, there is a collection of islands, some rather large, around the main island mass (The country comprises over 600 islands, but 85 per cent of its mass is mainland).
