Extractions: This Is Your Problem Friend, Not Mine towards a cure for formal language errors in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere.. One bunch of these Unitech characters, mostly engineers, had a kind of 4x4 jeep adventure club for exploring those tracks and villages which a tough vehicle could reach. I myself had a little Suzuki 4x4 truck, and this is the tale of a trip we made out through the Markham Valley to the village of Tawiane in the Snake River Valley. The Snake River Valley violently cleaves a mountain range, running back more or less northeast from Mumeng towards Lae, with Salamaua over the peaks to the east. An unsealed track winds inland from the little settlement of Mumeng, fording the Snake twice, and a tributary once before climbing up amongst the mountains. Mumeng was thus the jumping off point for our Unitech convoy into the untraveled reaches of the country. The exit was easy, but returning two days later, the ford closest to Mumeng, supported by a concrete spillway, had become quite submerged from heavy overnight rain.

Extractions: Dateline: 01/08/98 Violence against woman goes beyond all cultural, economic, political and religious backgrounds. The most dramatic form of violence against women is spousal abuse. Some studies have shown that in many countries, one quarter to more than half of women report having been physically or psychological abused by their partners (Heise, 1994). "In a study of 80 battered women in San José, Costa Rica, 49 per cent reported being beaten during pregnancy. In Papau New Guinea, 67 per cent of rural women and 56 per cent of urban women have been victims of spousal abuse, according to a national survey conducted by the Papua New Guinea Law Reform Commission. In Bangladesh, the killing of women by their husbands account for 50 per cent of all murders." (The advancement of women: note speakers, UN publication. 1995) One of the main contributing factor of violence against women is the differences between the genders due to the fact that many societies approve the "disciplining" of wives and usually ignore incidents of domestic violence.

CRUZENEWS FROM TEAM KYRNOS IN SAMOA We suffered culture shock when we hit Pago Pago. This morning, the whole troupe fromPapau new guinea took to the street paraded then stopped at their fale, as http://www.goals.com/kyrnos/samoa.htm
Extractions: We have left the quiet solitude of isolated atolls and islands for awhile and are now in Apia, Western Samoa (13 49'S,171 45'W) with 80 other close cruising boats! We are here for the 7th Pacific Arts Festival held every 4 years in different venues around the Pacific. More on the festival later but first a bit about or last stops. Suvarov or Suwarow as the Cook Islanders now call it was as good as the best of the Tuamotu Atolls we had seen despite the fact that there were 11 boats at anchor. The caretakers have just arrived. Margaret, Tom her fishing husband, Justin their 15 year old son adjusting to life without teenage distractions and Mark their 3 year old son who eased into the native lifestyle without a care. Justin did not like going in the water until Fred took him lobstering. Another boat gave him a mask and he was at home in the water. The sharks are reportedly aggressive in this atoll, however we snorkeled along side them without worry. Fred and 2 friends went spear fishing in the pass and even though the water was teaming with white tips and grey sharks, he still shot 4 fish. But the bucket sitting in the dinghy where he put the fish had a hole, so he thought he should drain the dinghy of fish blood. The greys started swarming the dinghy and his 2 fishing companions that were still in the water could not go back to the dinghy. After 5 minutes the greys moved on and the friends came aboard with a few words to say to Fred!

Extractions: Zak Kyes / betablog.com Main This is a brief statement on my design work that I wrote for an Art Directors Club award I'm nominated for. It's still a draft and some parts could be better resolved. Having to write this made me think about the local, day-to-day issues of design on a much broader level (making me identify the big questions that I don't have answers to). A good persepective to get when bad kerning seems to be of utmost gravity. Perspective is especially great if you can bring it back to the local and make somthing from it. Design Statement for Art Directors Club zak kyes, draft version: 3.1 I wasn't sure how to articulate my career goals of synthesizing design, content and culture until I saw a can of green beans in the supermarket this morning. The slick package proudly proclaimed "new package, same great content." The complete and even celebratory lack of connection between form and content might be a sign that design is disappearing. And I wish it would. If design were to disappear then designers would be forced to make their work relevant, to recognize the complex relationships between design, social issues, and the creation of an intelligent consumer culture. For this to occur, design needs to function as a form of critical synthesis, making connections between how we consume ideas, images, values and their influence on how we live. Design, like music, art, critical discourses, pop culture, theory, and architecture, should be able to provide a unique insight into the values that drive society, politics and corporations.

Extractions: here and here ZAK : how do you view your role as a designer, writer, conceptualizer.. and the importance of the interplay between them? DVDV : actually designer, writer and conceptualizer are all three part of our definition of designer. it is a relatively new thing to think of design as authorship, and it is also a problematic thing. design is traditionally seen as a support discipline, but increasingly we are becoming conscious that it is authorship itself and should be considered equal to, for instance, architecture. our efforts are in fact all about trying to work towards such a position. this has to be done in many ways simultaneously; by design, by writing, by editing, by publishing, by thinking in public. Z : by wrapping your message in fiction (the image of a simulated "truth") you destabilize your own message. to what extent is this your intention?

Radio Free Bougainville island. Bougainvillians do not share the same culture as papau NewGuinea; they are a different people with different values. Much http://radiodx.com/spdxr/RFB.htm
Extractions: Bougainville is the main island of the North Solomons group which, as the name implies, is not related geographically or ethnically to the rest of the islands of Papua New Guinea; and so, the inclusion of the the North Solomons as a province of PNG might be characterized as a colonial "accident". The international boundary with the Solomons is just a stone's throw off the southeast coast of Bougainville Island. Here's a backgrounder to the origins of Radio Free Bougainville, which I should think, regardless of one's sympathies, must properly be considered a clandestine operation at this time: "IARN GETS MEDICINE TO BOUGAINVILLE THROUGH NEW GUINEA BLOCKADE" Bougainville is a 130-mile long island with 160,000 citizens, northeast of Australia, between Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Bougainville was so named by the French Explorer Louis de Bougainville who first sighted the island in 1768. It was later annexed by the German New Guinea Company as part of their holdings. After the defeat of Germany in the First World War, the German territories, collectively termed New Guinea, became a part of the League of Nations Mandate and were placed under Australian administration. At this stage, Bougainville's leaders began to speak out against being held as a separate entity from their traditional brothers in the Solomons.
