In other words a palindrome (or palindromic number) is equal to its reverse. Thus for example 1331 is a palindrome. Such numbers have considerable psycho-mathematical significance with 1. For example 121 is such a palindrome. It is divisible by 11 with the result = 11 which of course is also a palindrome. (Note that in this example the highest digit 2 is even.) With the requirement that the highest digit is even the next such palindrome is 1234321. Again it is divisible by 11 with the result = 112211. Continuing on in this fashion the next such palindrome is 12345654321. Again it is divisible by 11 with the result = 1122332211. This pattern will repeat itself with the final single even digit in base 10 as highest digit. Thus 123456787654321 divided by 11 = 11223344332211.

The words a and I are perhaps the simplest and least interesting palindromes; the word racecar and the name Hannah are more interesting and illustrative. Neither spaces nor punctuation are usually taken into consideration when constructing sentences that are palindromes one of the most famous palindromes is A man, a plan, a canal, Panama but when the spaces are properly positioned as well, so much the better. An example would be the also famous palindrome Able was I ere I saw Elba , purportedly spoken by Napoleon, referring to his first sighting of the River Elba. Palindromes are a type of palingram called letter palingrams . A palingram is a sentence in which the letters, syllables, or words read the same backward as they do forward. The sentence, "He was, was he?" is a word palingram, because the words can be placed in reverse order and still read the same. The sentence, "I did, did I?" is not only a word palingram but a letter palingram (or palindrome) as well. A number of interesting palindromes are given below for your amusement. In fact, palindromes were once known as "Sotadic verses." If you've seen his name mentioned, you probably know he was thrown into the sea (wrapped in lead) by King Ptolemy II, for insulting the king in one of his verses. And that's it. Applying this process, we obtain: 87 + 78 = 165 165 + 561 = 726 726 + 627 = 1353 1353 + 3531 = 4884, a palindrome Whether all numbers eventually become palindromic under this process is unproved, but all numbers less than 10,000 have been tested. Every one becomes a palindrome in a relatively small number of steps (of the 900 3-digit numbers, 90 are palindromes to start with and 735 of the remainder take less than 5 reversals and additions to yield a palindrome). Except, that is, for 196. This number had been carried through 50,000 reversals and additions by P. C. Leyland, yielding a number of more than 26,000 digits without producing a palindrome. Later, P. Anderton continued the process up to 70,928 digits without encountering a palindrome. John then goes on to explain how, over the three years prior to 1990, he took this number out to 1,000,000 (one million) digits without it becoming a palindrome. Others have taken it further.
