In many ways, paleontology is more difficult than any other science because to be a good paleontologist you must know a great deal about all of these fields. Paleontology is among the broadest of sciences. The best starting point is a college preparatory program with as many science and math courses as possible. Outside reading in paleontology and visiting museums with fossil displays is helpful for building up knowledge of fossils themselves. No matter how interested or knowledgeable a student is in paleontology, however, good overall grades in high school are almost always required for admission to a good college or university, which is a necessary prerequisite for a career in paleontology. Sternberg Medal is awarded for outstanding lifetime achievement in the field of paleontology and/or for fostering cooperation, communication, and understanding between professional, amateur, and academic paleontologists. It is a wonderful opportunity for the AAPS to present this awards to friends and members who made great contributions in paleontology while they are still with us. The Sternberg Medal recipient is also given a lifetime honorary membership in the AAPS. The Charles H. Sternberg Medal is a cast 18K gold medallion, with an inscription on the back. Cast on the front is the image of an Edmontosaurus skull [the Sternbergs collected many], and the words Charles H. Sternberg Medal and AAPS. Inscribed on the back side is the name of honoree and the year presented.

This online manual of historical geology covers many important topics. For example you will find sections on rocks and minerals, sedimentary rocks, relative dating and stratigraphy, invertebrate and microfossils, evolution, vertebrate evolution, and much more. Each section also has a series of laboratory exercises to go along with the explanatory material and illustrations. A wonderfully informative site and we highly recommend it. Historical Geology . Pamela Gore. Among the wonders of this web site are individual sections on each of the geological periods from the Cambrian to the Present. Each period is covered in outline form with information about major trends in the evolution of plants and animals and the major changes in paleogeography and plate tectonics. Dinosaur Ridge is a geologically famous natural landmark, located along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, near Morrison, Colorado.
