Extractions: Paleontology Department The demise of the dinosaurs, along with the changes in local paleoenvironments, are just a couple of areas in which the Paleontology Department has been conducting research over the past decade. This research is conducted in the intermittent barren landscapes of the Little Missouri Badlands in southwest North Dakota. These badlands represent the latest Cretaceous Period, which was home to the dinosaurs, giant marina reptiles, and extinct exotic plants. Research teams associated with the museum have been working in these ancient environments collecting fossils of vertebrates, invertebrates and plants to try to reassemble what was present 65 million years ago. As a result of these studies, clues are emerging in regards to how the plants and animals are interacting, how abundant they were and what was present at the time of the meteor impact. The fossil remains of these plants and animals are brought back to our museum where they are prepared, curated and studied. Displays depicting the results of our findings are presented to the general public in our museum. Research results have been published by the museum staff, and with collaborators in leading scientific journals. These include vertebrates, invertebrates and plants from 73 million year old marine deposits up to the latest deposits of the area, which are 28 million years old. Some of the animals that have been found are mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, dinosaurs, and early mammals that include camels, rhinoceroses, horses and giant pigs.

The list is certainly not exhaustive. Many of these items are interrelated, and it is, therefore, often difficult or impossible to provide a simple solution for any single issue. In some instances, there may be more questions presented than answers offered. We hope these paragraphs will at least provide a starting point for further discussion. Critical Issues. Extractions: The "Paleontology and Dinosaurs" module for grades 7-10 teaches students basic paleontological concepts through the study of dinosaurs. The hands-on student activities use real data collected in the field, model dinosaurs, and fossils to allow students to look at the Earth's past by using a problem-solving approach. In addition, the module integrates science, mathematics, and geography into a high-interest topic. Through the teacher resource kit, which includes dinosaur models, fossils, slides, owl pellets, and the teacher/student notebook, students actively learn how fossil evidence gives paleontologists clues to the past history of Earth. Teachers are able to obtain the teacher resource kit and notebook for the "Paleontology and Dinosaurs" module by attending a teacher training workshop. The workshop provides teachers an opportunity to actively participate in the module activities while attending special lectures by paleontologists and geologists. A field trip to a site of related interest shows teachers local fossil resources in their community. The workshop provides the necessary scientific background for the teachers to successfully teach the module to their students.

(Mike Hettwer photo) Paleontologists have discovered 31 dinosaur skeletons in four years in the Hell Creek Formation around Jordan and the Fort Peck Reservoir alone, says Jack Horner, paleontologist at MSU's Museum of the Rockies. Not all were removed from the ground-or are expected to be. Of those skeletons, 10 were Triceratops, eight were Tyrannosaurus rex, five were duck-billed dinosaurs, and the rest were other smaller dinosaurs. Paleontologists, however, do more than just study dinosaur bones. Through the fossil record, paleontologists also study bacteria, plants, and other animals to reconstruct the history of life on Earth. Their data provide valuable insights into the evolutionary relationships of organisms. Some paleontologists examine the geologic record to study trends in past climates and environments, and can help predict the consequences of environmental change, such as global warming. Still other paleontologists work in the petroleum industry, where they identify sources of fossil fuel. In general, paleontology is the study of the geologic past and of ancient life-forms. Paleontology requires knowledge in biology, chemistry, and geology. Paleontologists who study early humans must also have an understanding of anthropology and sociology. The paleontologist's day-to-day work, like that of most scientists, requires a combination of creativity, teamwork, and meticulous measurement and record keeping.
