As any evolutionary biologist or ecologist knows from experience, the organisms most successfully adapted to a given environment will generally perceive any form of rapid change as decay of the environment and decreasing fitness. This is the famous Red Queen hypothesis, after a fictional character who must run as fast as she can just to stay in place. It seems probable that future historians of science will view the end of this century as a period of extremely rapid change. It is not surprising, then, to read in society newsletters and hear at meetings wails of distress over the "poor state of (insert your field of research here)". This view, which seems to be especially common within older fields of science, is a reflection of the even more famous hypothesis that The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side, together with a corollary of the Red Queen hypothesis, that Things Used to Be Better. The paleobotanical collections at The Field Museum are an important national and international resource for systematic and evolutionary plant biology. In the past five years these collections have grown by over 10% (ca. 7,800 specimens). Of the recent acquisitions, ca. 41% were added through the activities of Field Museum staff and associates, and ca. 59% were added through the acquisition of scientifically important donated collections. Active field work by Field Museum staff, associates and students during this period has resulted in steady growth of the paleobotanical collection. Geographic Strengths- The paleobotanical collections possess nearly worldwide coverage, but are strongest for North American localities. Within North America the collections are especially strong in Paleozoic material from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia, Mesozoic material from Alaska, Utah, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia and Tennessee, and Cenozoic material from Mississippi, Tennessee, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Colorado. Especially significant localities are described below.
