Here is a more detailed map of Kashmir region The total area of the state is 85,806 square miles, around the size of Utah or Minnesota. Pakistan controls about 43% (about the size of Indiana), India controls another 37% (about the size of South Carolina) and China controls about 20% (a little less than double the size of New Jersey). According to the 2001 census , the population of Indian Kashmir is with a density of 256 persons per square mile. The population of Pakistani Kashmir is 3.785 million according to the census . This comes to about 114 persons per square mile. The Chinese-controlled portion does not have any significant permanent habitation. If Kashmir were a US state, it would be the 5th most populous one, after California, Texas, New York and Florida. Kashmir consists of a number of distinct areas (with different history and ethnicity) and is controlled by three countries. The state can be divided generally into the Kashmir vale, Jammu province, Ladakh, Gilgit and Baltistan. India controls Kashmir valley, Jammu and Ladakh. Pakistan controls a strip of land which is called Azad (Free) Jammu and Kashmir and Northern Areas which consist of Gilgit and Baltistan. China controls the northeastern part of Ladakh (called Aksai Chin) and some area in Hunza/Baltistan (Shaksgam) that Pakistan gave to China in 1963 over the objections of India.

In the south, the land drops away from a 2,000 foot plateau, backed by a rugged escarpment three times as high, to meet the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Mountains The Zagros range stretches from the border with the Republic of Armenia in the north-west to the Persian Gulf, and then eastward into Baluchistan. As it moves southward, it broadens into a 125-mile-wide band of parallel, alternating mountains lying between the plains of Mesopotamia and the great central plateau of Iran. It is drained on the west by streams that cut deep, narrow gorges and water fertile valleys. The land is extremely hard, difficult to access, and populated largely by pastoral nomads.

Extractions: Background: Over the last three years (1996-98), I have been doing research in northern Pakistan in a region called Baltistan (http://www.pathfinder.com/travel/maps/PAKISTF.html). Baltistan is in the Karakoram mountain range. My research looks at some of the effects of tourism on villagers in Askole situated approximately 100 kilometers from the second highest peak in the world, K2 (elevation 8611 meters asl). Each year approximately a thousand adventure travelers, primarily mountain climbers and trekkers, pass through the village. Adventure travelers rely upon the labor of people in villages like Askole to carry their gear into the mountains. People who carry this gear are called porters. Although portering work is important to people in Askole, they also continue to maintain a land-based life style. The people who live in Askole, approximately 500 persons, are primarily subsistence agriculturists and pastoralists who raise wheat, potatoes, goats and sheep for yearly consumption. They also raise yak and dzo for food and draft needs. Most of the villagers' food and fuel are met by using local resources and household labor, although many of the village men are working as porters to earn money in order to supplement subsistence demands with a small cash income. Cash is necessary to provide villagers with goods and services that include, but are not limited to: clothing and household items, children's education, medical care, and religious pilgrimages to Mecca.

My doctoral thesis (2001) is entitled, "Spatial stories of researchers and travellers in a Balti Village, Pakistan: Jangli Geographies of Gender and Transculturation." I examine from a feminist postcolonial and poststructuralist perspective, texts and spatial stories about a village in northern Pakistan that has had and continues to have sustained interactions with travellers and tourists. The stories I tell, and the maps, photographs, travelogue and practices I deconstruct, help to better understand the contemporary relations of tourism in Baltistan. Although women and children seem absent from many written texts, I show how their landscape and spatial practices reveal and reproduce transcultural relations. My current research interests focus on issues of visual representation and cultural studies, feminist and postcolonial research methods, colonial histories and tourism, contemporary issues regarding globalisation and economic development, and the construction of animal-human spaces in tourism.
