The hierarchy of genres was omnipotent and state commissions were awarded only to academicians. But the court gradually lost its exclusivity in matters of taste and individual patronage took on a new significance. Up to around 1750, painting was imbued with pleasure, fable and light-heartedness . But, in the second half of the century, painters found themselves faced with a choice. Were they to be charming or instructive? Just as Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Diderot denounced society's decadence and exhorted a return to a simple, virtuous way of life, the trend towards heroic Antiquity , which in David and Jean-Germain Drouais ' works soon became synonymous with revolutionary valour, was directly opposed to the rocaille style and its best-known exponents Boucher and Fragonard. But, between these two extremes, were a host of nuanced styles sometimes represented by lesser-known painters, such as Natoire . At the very end of the century, the

Acknowledgment Of the paintings which survive from the Roman classical world, many are frescoes from the area of Campania around Naples. Campania includes Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other towns whose buildings, paintings, and sculptures were preserved by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. While there is evidence that the Romans also painted on portable panels, the surviving paintings that we can see today were painted directly on the walls of their rooms. Domestic interiors were claustrophobic - windowless and dark - so the Romans used painted decoration to visually open up and lighten their living spaces. Technical elements of Roman painting include the fresco technique; brightly colored backgrounds; division of the wall into multiple rectangular areas ( "tic-tac-toe" design); multi-point perspective; and trompe-l'oeil effects. The art of fresco as practiced in Classical times was described by Vitruvius ( De Architectura ) and Pliny The Elder ( Naturalis Historia .) A wall was prepared by the application of 1-3 coats of mortar (lime and sand) followed by 1-3 coats of lime mixed with finely powdered marble; colored pigments were applied while the wall was still damp. Sometimes tempura and liquid wax were added after the wall had dried.

Extractions: Socialist Realism: Initially an artistic and literary doctrine of political censorship in the Soviet Union. Established by the Union of Soviet Writers as a compulsory practice in 1932, Socialist Realism mainly dictated that artists portray a positive depiction of socialist society in conventionally realistic terms. After Stalin's death the practice of Socialist Realism opened tremendously (compare stalin-era paintings with post-stalin paintings in the gallery), and censorship gradually relaxed throughout the following decades (while censorship in the U.S. had gradually begun to fail in the 1960s, Soviet censorship remained comparatively strong until glasnost was enacted in the mid-1980s). The most famous definition for socialist realism is Aleksandr Gerasimov's explaination: "Realistic in form , Socialist in content ." Maxim Gorky had earlier summarized that Socialist Realism employs theory to portray the importance of social activity in shaping humans. Socialist Realism is primarily optimistic about life, Gorky explained, and is cognisent of the educational role of art, whether potraying information through images, sounds or text.
