What is Outdoor Recreation? According to a 1993-94 Nova Scotia Woodlot Owner Survey conducted for the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, 27 per cent of respondents said outdoor recreation was one of the reasons they own their woodlot. Outdoor recreation refers to leisure activities that take place in a natural setting and benefit the body, mind and/or spirit. Examples are hiking, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling and wildlife viewing. Outdoor recreation can overlap with competitive outdoor activities such as orienteering or ski races. It can also be done with other activities such as environmental education for example hiking to study an old growth forest. Outdoor recreation can also simply be enjoying the peace and quiet in a non-physical way.

Warrior News: BOSS Conference Energizes Members Members said the group encourages, identifies and plans leisure and recreationalactivities, community service volunteer events, and well being issues. http://warrior.blogs.com/ruck/2003/11/boss_conference.html
Extractions: hostName = '.blogs.com'; Main CAMP RED CLOUD, South Korea â With a promise of increased community involvement, Area I officials kicked off a quarterly Better Opportunities for Single and Unaccompanied Soldier conference at Camp Red Cloud's Mitchell's Club Nov. 5. Forty-seven soldiers and civilians participated in the event. BOSS council members listened to briefings on how to build participation and teamwork. Since BOSS was established in 1991, the organization has supported quality of life for single and unaccompanied soldiers. Members said the group encourages, identifies and plans leisure and recreational activities, community service volunteer events, and well being issues. Officials from the Directorate of Community Activities explained how events are funded. BOSS activities may receive support from nonappropriated funds through Morale, Welfare and Recreation. However, guidelines for what can and cannot receive funding are complicated. Many new BOSS members were unaware of complex funding rules. One issue that came up was providing donations to orphanages. "Money gathered at BOSS events turns into 'soldier' money, and must be turned back to MWR," said Denise James, Area I director of community activities. "These funds cannot be given as donations to outside organizations."
