Extractions: Swedish Museum of Natural History The collections maintained by the Ornithology Section are property of the scientific community. Ourduty is mainly to keep the collections in good condition for eternal use, and to make them available forscientific study. Thus, we permit loans to all scientists worldwide that are doing taxonomic studies, systematic revisionsor comparable work. The following restrictions apply: The loanee must be permanent staff of a research museum or university. If you are a student, wewill lend to your supervisor or the curator of the museum. If you are based somewhere else, pleasemake an agreement with the nearest museum to study the material there. Loans are issued for periods of 3, 6 or 12 months. To keep it longer, just write, or reply to ourreminders. Any kind of dissection or treatment that damages specimens requires prior authorization from us. We may refuse a loan if we feel that the loan is not necessary for the study for which requested. Types are lent only in exceptional cases after individual agreement.

Grubb, Jr. Department of Zoology The Ohio State University Back Home Published by The Boxwood Press Used with Permission Preface Chapter One - Ornithology as a Science Chapter Two - Analytical Ornithology Chapter Seven - When Do Great Blue Herons Give Up? ... Appendix 2 - The Spearman Rank Correlation Test Preface One of the most influential field studies of birds ever performed was conducted just north of my university here in Columbus. While carrying on her duties as wife, mother and homemaker, Mrs. Margaret Morse Nice devoted many hours to studying the behavior and ecology of Song Sparrows . Mrs. Nice's account of her work is generally regarded as one of the finer examples of descriptive ornithology ever produced in North America by anyone, amateur or professional. At the time of Mrs. Nice's study, amateurs were routinely making important contributions to ornithology. General conclusions they reached from their field work were useful additions to the body of knowledge about birds, However, from the 1950s on, as the study of avian biology became more analytical and less descriptive, contributions by amateurs became less pivotal to the discipline. One of the functions of this book is to bring the techniques of analytical ornithology to the amateur student of birds. Descriptive ornithology, which Mrs. Nice accomplished so beautifully, requires careful observation and note-taking on the behavior of birds in their natural environment. The next step is to look for generalities, common attributes about the events seen. For example, after a number of years of watching the Song Sparrows she had color-banded, Mrs. Nice could generalize that in Columbus, Ohio, only males of the species stayed on the breeding ground all winter.

Extractions: National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds Of North America, 4th Edition Average customer rating: I searched for a textbook on ornithology that I could use in association with the Bird Biology Home Study Course that I was planning to take through Cornell University. I found the textbook at Amazon.com. The information in this textbook is absolutely wonderful! Frank Gill presents an "encyclopedia" of information in an easy-to-read, comprehensible format. Anyone interested in the serious study of bird biology will want to add this textbook to his or her bookshelf. Within the next few months, I will reread this textbook again. How many textbook readers can honestly state that they would reread any textbook in its entirety? Every chapter intrigued and delighted me. I will be actively searching for more books by Frank Gill, based upon the presentation of materials in Ornithology, 2nd edition. Could not put it down....

Extractions: National Geographic Field Guide To The Birds Of North America, 4th Edition Average customer rating: This book is excellent for ornithology students and backyard birders alike. It has many detailed illustrations of the skeletal, muscular, and other internal systems of birds in general. The text gives general information on each system and then more detail on specific parts. I especially like the sections at the end on binocular use and study skin preparation If you have only one textbook about birds on your bookshelf, choose this one. The text is easy to understand, and the illustrations are remarkable. It is now available in a less expensive paperback version, also available at Amazon.com.
