IRONBARK ORGANIC GARDENS methods used are taken from the best examples of intensive gardening from throughout The objective is always top quality organic produce grown in a small space http://users.netcon.net.au/~hermes1/ironbark.html
Extractions: I RONBARK O RGANIC G ARDENS Intensive Organic Systems on a Small Urban Farm 4 Harrison St, Bendigo, Australia, 3550 Dr Rod Blackhirst (w) 54 447 813 hermes1@mail.netcon.net.au Ironbark Organic Gardens is an experimental urban farm in the suburb of Ironbark in Bendigo Australia. Comprised of two urban blocks it is about half an acre in size. It is on a gentle slope down to creek flats and is situated about ten minutes walk from the centre of town. The terraced gardens are dedicated to intensive herb and vegetable production for private consumption and local sale. All methods used are entirely organic. The land originally consisted of badly damaged soil. The permanent raised beds have been built up with animal manures, straw and large quantities of compost. The soil still has some way to go before all previous damage has been remedied. The horticultural methods used are taken from the best examples of intensive gardening from throughout the world, from ancient Greece to modern France, but applied in a holistic manner. The golden rule in all things is to stay within the framework of nature. The objective is always top quality organic produce grown in a small space using a minimum of water, fertilizer and labour. The main methods used are taken from the work of the master gardener Alan Chadwick who adapted the French Intensive Method to organic principles. Plants are grown in humus-rich, beautifully structured, aerated, living soil that is double-dug and enriched with ripe compost and natural fertilizers for every new crop.
