With its other branches in Switzerland and Germany, the FiBL family now covers the entire German-speaking region. Work in Austria will concentrate at first upon national and international knowledge transfer, as well as animal health. The launch is supported by one salaried member of staff and several freelancers. Further Information top (07.06.2004) At a recent conference in Berlin, Germany, the issue of organic data collection and processing and possibilities of improvements was discussed. It became obvious that the relevant authorities are highly interested in collecting and processing of statistical data on organic farming but that there is a great need for harmonisation of data collection - both on a national and on a European level. The event had been organised by the project European Information systems for Organic Markets (EISFOM), funded by the European Commission.

It aims to improve quality, ensure safety and enhance productivity in organic food supply chains in Europe. Over the next five years, the project will receive 18 million EUR to carry out research across the food chain, from fork to farm. The focus will be on farm-based research in cereals, vegetables, dairy, poultry and pork production. For example, agronomists will test different management strategies for improvements in soil fertility and control of disease, weeds and pests to improve yields of high quality. Livestock experts will assess how improved husbandry methods and feeding regimes can improve the nutritional quality of organic milk.

Extractions: email: sustainable.agriculture@uvm.edu The Center for Sustainable Agriculture was established in 1994 as a unit within the University of Vermont to integrate university and community expertise to promote sustainable farming systems throughout Vermont and the region. Our programs are collaborative efforts that always involve farmers, the University, and other organizations. Many people want to farm in Vermont, but finding a place to do it can be challenging. Land Link Vermont, coordinated by Deb Heleba, addresses the obstacles farmers face in securing and transferring land. The program manages a matching service that connects new-entry and transitioning farmers with retiring farmers and non-farming landowners. Land Link also offers workshops, publications, and consultations that provide information about farmland tenure options, inter-generational transfer of farms, and farm management. To assure a bright future for agriculture in Vermont, it is critical that we address the special needs of beginning farmers. The Center is a founding member of the Vermont New Farmer Network, which helps new farmers succeed by enhancing their access to land, capital, markets and production skills. The Center facilitates collaboration among the Network's members, and guides new farmers to the resources they need.
