The Center made its debut in 2000 and has become a prime attraction for tourists visiting Three Island Crossing State Park in Glenns Ferry, Idaho. The 10,000 square foot facility tells a story about two very different cultures brought together at the Three Island Crossing on the Oregon Trail. It reveals how pioneers and Native Americans met the challenges of an expanding nation and the importance of the Three Island Ford. Native Americans used the site as a place to fish for salmon and as safe passage to the other side of the river. They knew the river well and used this knowledge to help emigrants cross the Snake. They also took advantage of their fishing abilities and bartered fresh salmon for items brought West by pioneers tired of bacon, beans and hard bread.

This activity is part of their Literature/English/Writing classes. Seventh graders complete writing assignments using activity sheets and the diary. In the classroom students keep a journal about their adventure . They make special writing paper to imitate the type of paper emigrants may have used in the 1800's. Students read about the history of the Oregon Trail, the reasons settlers left their homes and traveled West, the hardships they encountered, as well as the landmarks and places of interest they found along the way. Students learn about the Native Americans along the route and how they felt about the migration westward. To complement their trip, they also go on an Oregon Trail Internet Scavenger Hunt. Extractions: End of the Oregon Trail By the 1860s, Oregon City had lost its position of prominence, following the establishment of Oregon's new capital at Salem and the growth of the downriver town of Portland. It still remained a literal crossroads, as the Willamette Falls marked the division between steamboat traffic on the upper and lower river until construction of the locks in the 1870s. It was also a favored site for the railroads, and the Southern Pacific placed its water-level route along the coast. In a typical year, there are 70,000 to 80,000 visitors to the Center from as far away as Germany, Japan, Australia, and South Africa.
