Extractions: The opossum is a unique Missouri mammal because it is our only representative of a large group of primitive mammals, the pouched mammals or marsupials, that live mostly in Australia. The females of this group typically have a prominent marsupium, or pouch, on the belly where the young are carried and nourished for a time after their birth. The common name, opossum, is a corruption of the Algonquian Indian name, apasum. Description. The opossum is 2-3 feet (609-914 mm) long. Its head is white to yellowish with a pink nose, black eyes and bluish black, naked ears. The long, rather coarse body fur is predominantly grayish white but tends to be darker on the front and hind legs. The long, scaly tail is black at its base, grading to yellowish white or pink for the rest of its length. Opossums weigh 4-l5 pounds (1.8-6.8 kg), males being larger than females.

The opossum is the only living marsupial (mammal with a pouch) in North America today. Weighing in at 9 pounds, the opossum has a white face, a fuzzy grey body, naked ears, and a scaly, prehensile tail. Prehensile means that the tail is adapted for seizing, grasping, and wrapping itself around objects. The common picture of opposums hanging by their tails is, for the most part, a myth. A young oposum may hang briefly by its tail. But an adult opossum's body is far too heavy to be held suspended by its tail. The opossum actually uses its tail to stabilize its body while climbing. Opossums are not related to rats. They are marsupials and are exceptionally clean. Like cats, they are fastidious and groom themselves. Opossums are extremely resistant to disease. They have a strong resistance to rabies and to snake bites, including rattlesnakes. Opossums are sometimes referred to as the sanitation engineers of the forest. They help to keep the environment clean by consuming carion and all kinds of bugs, including roaches. They help gardeners by consuming snails, slugs, and other destructive creatures. They also eat over ripe fruit before it rots and catch and eat rats. In fact, opossums will eat just about anything. Leave a bowl of cat food or dog food out long enough and you'll probably attract a opposum. But you may never see your extra dinner guest: opossums are strictly nocturnal.

The first time I heard a barred owl's haunting call, the wood thrush serenade which awakened my husband and me one morning in North Carolina, and the coyote which trotted across our path at St. Joseph Peninsula state park. Simmering just below my consciousness, they bubble to the surface now and then in moments of reflection. Recently, when I caught the moon-shiney eyes of an opossum on our deck, I recalled the babies I've raised and wondered if she might be one of them. Before I returned to teaching full time, our house was always full of the wild orphans I cared for as a volunteer with St. Francis Wildlife. While attending graduate school at FSU, I sometimes secretly nursed a boxful of baby squirrels or 'possums with one hand while taking notes with the other. That is, until the day a baby opossum grabbed hold of my hair and crawled, one tiny fist over the other, to the top of my head, which must have simulated the security of her momma's back. All eyes were on us, including the professor, who made it very clear that he would not compete with such an "ugly creature."

Concerned citizens are urged to check the dead opossum. If female, there may still living babies inside the pouch. Thousands of baby opossums have been saved by those attentive citizens who have transported the dead mother with her living babies still attached, to the nearest wildlife rehabilitation center. Opossums are perhaps the most fascinating of all the wildlife in our area and are an important and beneficial part of the "wildlife scene".
