Extractions: Ever Wonder Why Folks Packed Up and Moved to Oklahoma? Here is an article that was widely circulated in Newspapers, Magazines and other types of publications. Read what enticed your ancestors to hit the road to Oklahoma Chronicles of Okla 1951 Vol 29, Pg 285. Reprint of an article by Charles Morean Harger, "The Next Commonwealth-Oklahoma" in the magazine "The Outlook" 2 Feb 1901 issue: "Romance in pioneering is fast disappearing from the West. "Settler" and "Claim" in a few years will be marked obsolete. As ranch succeeded ranch so farm and field are taking the place of the prairie... Even in the newest of pioneer communities-the "Promised Land" of Oklahoma-such signs of permanent settlement are manifest as to disappoint the seeker after sensational newness. Here as nowhere else in the world are whole counties with a family on every quarter section and only one ..... Few more beautiful pictures can be seen on the plains than an Eastern Oklahoma landscape. The gently rolling rich loamy soil or even the reddish tinge of clay with myriads of bale or straw stacks-the green of growing wheat, the thrifty farm houses and the promising orchards unite to tell of agricultural success . . . Father south comes the cotton country. A fertile soil that can produce the staples of the North and South ought to be sufficient for the most exacting. Two openings have made Oklahoma what it is-the original one in 1889 and that of the Cherokee Strip in 1893. Another that will probably be more interesting than either will occur next year-that of the Kiowa Apache Comanche reservations lying to the south of the land first given to settlers, . . comprising approximately three million acres."

Extractions: Entries Publication Data Advisory Board Maps ... World Civilizations Encyclopedia of North American Indians The flourishing publishing industry that provides vital communications links within and among American Indian communities today had its foundation in the establishment of the Cherokee Phoenix at New Echota, Cherokee Nation, in 1828. Native journalists today consider its young Cherokee editor, Elias Boudinot, to be the father of American Indian journalism and see their role much as his: to reflect a self-defined image of the Indian community and to give expression to Indian thought and opinion to outside readers as well as the local community. While the traditional mainstay of native periodical publishing has been newspapers, the twentieth century has witnessed a steady growth in magazine publication and, in recent decades, the establishment of journals of American Indian thought and opinion. Despite obstacles, native newspaper and other periodical publishing has achieved a high degree of sophistication and professionalism. Publishers have the technical capability and expertise to focus on the major issues that confront their constituencies on local, regional, and national levels. They have established information networks among themselves and with organizations involved in the indigenous peoples' movement worldwide. As it has grown, the native press has become more authoritative and has exerted a stronger influence on behalf of the empowerment of native communities.
Extractions: One issue covered by the mass media in Oklahoma has been swine concentrated animal feeding operations. In fact, Oklahoma members of The Associated Press selected the debate on hog farming and other agricultural issues as the third most important news story in Oklahoma in 1997. (Kurt, 1997, p. 1). Due to the increase of these large-scale operations, swine numbers in the state grew substantially during the late 1990s (Bloyd, 1999), prompting legislation to regulate the operations' impact on the environment (Oklahoma Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations Act, 1998).
