    Extractions: PRESENT CIVIL WAR ENCAMPMENT Over 1,500 eighth grade students learned first hand about life during the Civil War on May 5 and 6 when Moore Public Schools and the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Oklahoma State Museum of History reenactors presented the fourth annual encampment at Moore’s Central Junior High stadium. The event was held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.  Students learned that life was very difficult for Civil War soldiers. If a soldier was injured, he was treated by doctors that had one year of training, if that much. Soldiers were exposed to contagious diseases such as typhoid fever, malaria, cholera, and smallpox. Forty percent of the soldiers exposed got sick. For every 2 people killed in battle, 3 died from disease.  Camp life and food were primitive at best. Corn had to be boiled before eating to rid it of weevils and worms. Hardtack, a hard biscuit made of flour and water was a main staple of the soldier’s diet. Raw meat taken from wild animals that were shot was distributed to soldiers after sitting for hours in the hot sun. Most soldiers survived by foraging for whatever food they could find, such as berries and leaves, from the area surrounding encampments.
