Extractions: CARTER COUNTY Carter County Courthouse at Ardmore Carter County was created in 1907 from part of the old Chickasaw Nation. Pickens County was renamed Carter County in honor of Ben Carter, prominent Native American of the Chickasaw Nation. Members of the Constitutional Convention chose Ardmore as the county seat because it was the largest town in that section of the new state and the site of a federal court during the territorial era. The first county officials used office space in the former federal courthouse building, which had been constructed in 1898 for $20,000. It soon proved to be too small for county needs, so in 1909 Carter County residents approved a $125,000 bond issue to purchase land and fund construction of a new building. The firm of Layton, Wemyss Smith and Hawk of Oklahoma City developed the plans and the job was completed in 1910 by the Gill Construction Company. The design was a rich combination of architectural elements. The dominant style was Neo-Classical, with repetitious use of colossal Doric columns, classical detailing, and an ornate tower and dome. The tower was decorated with Ionic columns, a ribbed and vaulted roof, and over-sized clocks. Providing contrast against this classical composition were arched doorways and windows on the ground level. In 1976, using the design of Flood, Isenberg, and Hann, the entire courthouse was renovated.

Extractions: Before modern settlers and Indians came to Oklahoma, the land was occupied by hunter-agriculture peoples. Near Anadarko, archeologists discovered the bones of a mammoth and several spear points. They estimate the mammoth was killed more than 11,000 years ago. The spear point was identified as belonging to an ancient group of hunters called the Clovis culture. From 500 to 1300 AD, the Spiro Mound Builders lived in an area just west of the Arkansas/Oklahoma border. Items left in burial mounds show the Mound Builders to be skilled artists. Oklahoma's written history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado ventured through this area. At that time, it was the home of the Plains Indian tribes, such as the Osage, Kiowa, Apache and Comanche. In 1803, Oklahoma was sold to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In the 1830s, the federal government forced the Five Civilized Tribes to leave their homelands. These tribes were living in the southeastern part of the U.S. They had to walk to Oklahoma over a trail that became known as the "Trail of Tears." Many men, women and children died during this long and treacherous trip. Once these people settled here, Oklahoma became Indian Territory. Many of the Indians sided with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. As punishment for this after the war, a series of treaties forced the Indian nations to give up the western half of the Indian Territory to the U.S. This area became home for other Indian tribes.

Extractions: Still working on this one!!!! History of Paoli Settlers first came to this area in 1874. The Dulin Family was to the North and the Florence Family to the West. Both had large ranches with farms to produce feed for the cattle and horses. The Santa Fe Railroad was laid in 1887 and the Paoli Post Office was opened on June 27, 1888. Many settlers came from Texas, Tennessee, and Alabama to begin their new lives in Paoli. They bought land from the Indians after 1907 statehood. It was a small flourishing town until the 1940's, when the war effort took many families away. Also new farm machinery made it possible for fewer men to farm more land. In the early days, they raised cotton, broomcorn, corn, wheat, alfalfa, sorghum grains, and peanuts. The first of many oil and gas wells in Paoli was on the Florence ranch West of Paoli in 1916.

Extractions: Charles H. Heald was born March 17, 1843, in Skulleyville, Indian Territory to John Hobart Heald and Lucy Wright Heald. He married Elizabeth Jane Guy, who was part Chickasaw Indian, at Elm Grove, Indian Territory, April 14, 1861. After serving in the Civil War he returned to Indian Territory where he and Eliza Jane lived for many years at Old Mill Creek. Eliza Jane died there November 26, 1887. She was buried in the cemetery on the banks of Mill Creek. In April of 1992 Eliza Jane was re-interred at Boggy Depot Historical Cemetery, one of Oklahoma's oldest and most historical burial sites. In 1888 Charles H. Heald settled at Healdton, for whom the town was later named. He married Fanny Nicholas, June 18, 1891 and they lived in the same house 24 years until his death. As one of the very early settlers in the Indian Territory Charles Hobart Heald was destined to become the leading citizen of the town now known as Healdton.
