Education World's "Principal Files" team has some ideas for you! Staff meetings can be the most important and productive professional development opportunities of the school year; on the other hand, they can be the most dreaded and squandered time a teacher will spend. So, what makes the difference between wonderful and wasteful meetings? That's the question we posed to Education World's Principal Files team . We asked team members to tell us about their best-ever staff meetings. According to Ed World's P-Files team, successful staff meetings are a function of the purpose, the planning, and the pace of those meetings.

"That [information] is very powerful," one program administrator told Education World. Included: Administrators from rural and urban school systems tell Education World how they are gearing up their students for college! Middle school students in Dewar, Oklahoma; Riverton, Wyoming; and Los Angeles come from vastly different backgrounds and experiences, but many now are working toward a common goal college thanks to a federal grant program

Extractions: Email: jean.ann.seago@nursing.ucsf.edu My program of research focuses on understanding how nursing systems and other organizational systems in acute care hospitals impact patient outcomes and nurse workforce outcomes. One specific interest is to create a better understanding of how nursing units in acute care hospitals can create systems to improve both patient outcomes and nurse workforce outcomes. Because of my work as an acute care hospital administrator and nurse executive, I am interested in factors that predicted nurse workforce outcomes such as turnover, absenteeism, and job satisfaction. As my research skill increased, I also became interested in organizational variables and the large databases that contain many of these variables. In 1997, my research began to move more in the direction of health services research but with a focus on nursing systems and the nurse workforce. I began to investigate organizational variables as predictors (length of stay, hours per patient day, skill mix, RN union), and positive patient events (patient satisfaction) and adverse patient events (medication errors, patient falls, decubitus ulcers, mortality) as outcomes.
