Extractions: Fuel oil spills typically occur in the fall at the start of the heating season, when oil deliverers are likely to be new and unfamiliar with the homes they are serving. Homeowner changes could also lead to confusion at oil-delivery time. The spills typically happen in the basements of homes from overfilled tanks or through fill pipes that have no tanks attached! Other spills have occurred when oil was mistakenly dumped into septic tank vents or drinking water wells. Cleanup costs will be paid by whoever is responsible for the spill. If lawyers are involved in determining responsibility, costs will be even higher. Therefore, it is particularly important that you do what you can to prevent spills from happening: If you remove your fuel oil tank, be sure to also remove the fill pipe. Call your oil company to cancel any future deliveries. Do not put an oil cap, or anything that looks like an oil cap, on septic tank vents, drinking water wells, etc. Keep tank caps tightly sealed except when filling or emptying the tank.

But imagine if one of the steady stream of tankers coming into Marsden Point oil refinery caused a major oil spill. With the constant shipping activity into Whangarei Harbour and up and down the coast, Northlanders must be prepared. NRC staff in training. The Northland Regional Council has prepared an Oil Spill Contingency Plan and holds regular training exercises to ensure that a core group of experts can deploy equipment quickly and efficiently. The strategy is to contain and clean up as much oil as possible before it reaches our precious shoreline, fishing grounds and shellfish beds. The Regional Council is responsible for the care and maintenance of a large amount of expensive oil spill equipment housed at Marsden Point. This equipment belongs to the Maritime Safety Authority and is a significant portion of the arsenal of equipment available for immediate deployment in New Zealand. The Regional Council is required to respond to all oil spills. When an oil spill is too large to be dealt with on a local basis, the Maritime Saftey Authority staff will use regional resources including those of the Northland Regional Council.

Extractions: The purpose of this activity is to develop a test tube model of an oil spill in order to experiment with conditions needed for bioremediation. During each phase of this project, students have the opportunity to experience the work of science research. Lab teams of three to four students develop flow charts of their procedures before moving to the laboratory to work. Teams are required to keep accurate and detailed lab logs of their work. Each team is given minimal media, RAG-1 streak plates and new and used motor oil. They first follow an established protocol to establish a test tube model and then are challenged to design an experiment to enhance the oil degrading properties of marine bacteria. Students learn to apply the principals of experimental design by analyzing a research article on the EXXON Valdez bioremediation efforts and developing and using positive and negative controls. Specrophotometric measurement techniques are used to quantify data. The Student's t-test is used to determine if the data are statistically significant. At the conclusion of this activity, students develop seminar presentations and defend their research design and findings. A large oil spill is one of the most dramatic and terrible environmental disasters. Heart wrenching photographs of oil soaked birds and marine mammals capture our attention and concern. Oil spills have a predictable progression. Usually the oil spill is crude oil which contains volatile substances that have low boiling points. These substances evaporate immediately, reducing the spill by 25% but releasing toxic substances into the atmosphere. The remaining oil is very thick and sticky and adheres to anything it touches including rocks, sand and marine life. Some of this oil is degraded by marine bacteria which degrades the hydrocarbon in oil for use as a carbon source.

Under Washington State law, tankers and cargo ships transiting through Puget Sound require a tug escort east of Port Angeles. Pilots board each vessel shortly after tug escorts arrive. This scenario entails a collision in the precautionary area northwest of Port Angeles and the pilot boarding area. The precautionary area is a convergence zone where inbound and outbound vessels come into close proximity to one another as they transition from one shipping lane to another. It is an area of high risk and great concern to state regulatory agencies which monitor traffic in the Sound.

Oiling of the vegetation and banks of a creek or river kills the vegetation and can degrade available habitat and contaminate food sources. As cleanup of a spill progresses, the removal of woody debris, rocks, and the washing of banks not only reduce habitat but also can lead to increased erosion and bank instability. This makes remediation and colonization by new plants and animals extremely difficult and lengthens the time it takes an area to recover from the effects of the oil spill. Crude oil can contain substances such as, Benzene, Toluene, Zylene, Ethylene and heavy metals. These can contaminate soil and eventually water. If oil were to enter and foul a municipal or industry water supply the cost could be staggering. Oil is often mixed with brine or saltwater, so oil spills may contain both. Freshwater fish, insects and plants are often killed by high concentrations of saltwater. Area drinking water plants are not equipped for the removal of salt from drinking water. Saltwater spills are therefore often harder to contain and can be more difficult to clean up than an oil spill.

Introduction Leaks and spills of fuel oil, gasoline and other petroleum products contaminate New York's environment in many ways. Oil spills pollute groundwater, on which many New Yorkers depend for drinking water. Vapors from spills enter indoor environments where people live and work. Gasoline often contains toxic additives which, along with the gasoline itself, are difficult to clean up and cause environmental problems.
