Extractions: Ohio ODNR Puts Interactive Underground Mine Map on Internet By ART LIMANN The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Geological Survey has made a new interactive map of Ohio's known underground mines, active and abandoned, available on the Internet. According to the ODNR, the new interactive Web-based map shows the locations of potential areas of mine subsidence and will be useful to homeowners, realtors, geo-technical consultants, land-use planners and others interested in the location and extent of Ohio's abandoned underground mines. Belmont County Engineer Paul Bennett has not used the new map yet. He noted he just recently found out about the new map and thinks it might be of help to him. Bennett said much of Belmont County has been mined, prompting interest in where the mines were located. Paul Hamilton, professional surveyor and GIS manager for Jack Hamilton and Associates in Flushing, said he also just found out about the new map. His company currently uses digital maps put out by the Ohio Division of Geological Survey, but he believes the new map might be more detailed.

GIS Mapping Of The Yields Of Ohio's Aquifers Click for interactive map ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water, Hydrogeology Program Columbus, ohio By Michael Angle, Frank Fugitt, Bill http://www.esri.com/mapmuseum/mapbook_gallery/volume16/natural1.html
Extractions: Automation The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water, has produced statewide GIS coverages for the unconsolidated and bedrock aquifers of Ohio. These maps depict the approximate yield, in gallons per minute, of the aquifers. Lighter colors represent lower yields, and darker colors represent higher yields. Well logs, drilling reports, and other geologic and hydrogeologic information were used to delineate the unconsolidated and bedrock aquifer maps. These hand-drawn, 7.5-minute quadrangle maps (1:24,000) were digitized and joined to produce statewide polygon coverages. In addition to yield, attributes for the bedrock aquifer coverages include aquifer extent, name, and thickness. Additional attributes for the unconsolidated aquifers include drift thickness, hydrogeologic settings, local names, and lithology. Before it had created the GIS coverages, the Division of Water produced countywide groundwater resource maps at a 1:62,500 scale. The county maps were produced using traditional cartographic and printing methods, which made correcting and updating a difficult and expensive process. The new statewide GIS maps provide more information at a higher level of detail than the existing county maps while seamlessly incorporating updates into the process. Now, consultants, engineers, planners, homeowners, and well drilling contractors, who are interested in developing a groundwater supply, have current and accurate information on the groundwater resources of Ohio.

Extractions: Columbus, Ohio, Tops the List of Best Cities for Black Famlies By Yvonne Latty, BET.com Correspondent Posted Oct. 1, 2002 A six-month study by BET.com has found that Columbus, Ohio, is the No. 1 city for Black families. Columbus is a growing community of diverse neighborhoods, high employment, affordable homes and, according to its supporters, lots of African Americans who care about their community so much you couldn't pay them to move. "We got it going on and I'm proud to say it," said Mayor Michael Coleman, the first African-American mayor in a city of 174,000 Blacks. "This is the hottest city in the country when it comes to everything and this doesn't surprise me because our focus is on being the best. We have the second hottest job market and we work very hard in the area of housing. When people come to Columbus they love it and they often times come back and stay because they love it so much." Samuel Gresham Jr., president of the Urban League of Columbus, said, "In the 1970's a bunch of Black people came to town and said if we stayed here long enough we would have an impact. One of those people is now the mayor, another is the superintendent of schools, three are on the city council, and a couple of others are judges. We had the confidence in ourselves that we could create a community and we stayed."

Extractions: From his rise to prominence as head of Serbia's Communist Party in the late 1980s to his arrest on war crimes charges in 2001, former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic has captured the world's attention. How much do you know about the man who presided over Europe's bloodiest string of conflicts since World War II? In April 1987, Slobodan Milosevic, then a Communist Party apparatchik, visited Pristina to quell ethnic unrest in Kosovo between Serbs and ethnic Albanians. Claiming that the Kosovo Albanian government was discriminating against them, Serbs in Kosovo were threatening a mass exodus. As a crowd gathered around Milosevic at the city's cultural center, Serbs shouted, "They are beating us!" When Milosevic was elected president of Serbia in 1989, he timed his inauguration ceremony to coincide with the anniversary of this event, in which Serbs battled with Ottoman Turks. Although Serbs were defeated in this 1389 battle, it was a symbol of Serbs' strength to fight against non-Serb control.
