David and Shirley Wright gave the academic challenge speech at the University of Dayton Convocation for new students on August 21, 2001. Research is directed towards understanding cell motility and the nuclear and cytoskeletal aspects of fertilization. Pronuclear development is a pivotal period during fertilization, because the successful genetic reactivation of the dormant sperm nucleus and maternal chromatin by egg cytoplasm is essential for bipartental embryonic development. One project of the lab is to use an in vitro nuclear system to elucidate the factors regulating male pronuclear development at the cellular and molecular levels. Another area of research analyzes the role of the cytoskeleton in the fertilization process. These projects utilize fluorescence microscopy, video microscopy, and biochemical techniques. Staff visited numerous cultural institutions, responded to requests for information, and selected collections submitted by Ohio institutions for inclusion in the Ohio Memory Online Scrapbook. With the assistance of the Ohio Library Council (OLC), the staff presented a series of six workshops to publicize the project. The project team updated the project web site to make more information about Ohio Memory available and encourage participation. They conducted usability testing of the web interface to refine and finalize the design of the site, making sure that it meets the needs of its users. In addition, staff worked closely with OhioLINK in developing the online scrapbook. Extractions: Because of a shortage in revenue in FY03, the Alabama legislature cut many educational programs, one of which was technology. In fact, state funding for technology to the local school districts was cut from $181 per teacher to zero. At the annual Alabama Education Technology Association Symposium, district technology leaders and superintendents met in roundtable discussions concerning the funding crisis. Their discussions led to the exploration of the question, "Do our leaders really understand what would happen in our schools if the technology was suddenly turned off?" The concept of a "Technology Blackout Day" was conceived. After further discussions it was decided that turning off all of the technology for a day would be unsafe to the school children. Therefore, a more positive approach was taken to educate key decision makers on the value of technology in our educational system. A

However, this system had many problems. There was no real team involvement between the district director, district specialists, and county chairs in supporting an agent, and there were often disagreements between the district director and the county chair regarding criteria used to evaluate an agent. Because the prior system was based on numerical ratings, an individual agent could receive two entirely different scores because the respective district director and the county chair could have entirely different opinions regarding the agent's programmatic priorities, activities, and performance. The Alaska Department of Education, Tri-Rivers Educational Computer Association (TRECA), South East Regional Resource Center (SERRC), the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS), Ashland University and Chugach School District have collaborated in the development and implementation of this five year professional development project. In addition, ARCTIC will develop and implement a self-sustaining state-wide technology consortium. Six essential components of the program include internships, situated classroom experiences, outreach, summer institutes, on-site support and leadership workshops.
