The plan describes the goals and objectives for three areas: Administration/Management, Instruction, and Professional Development. Committees are working to develop action plans for each objective to include the steps for implementation, the responsible person or organization, the timeline, and the cost, if known. These action plans will be taken to the State Board this summer. Other actions will be taken this summer to implement a report from the governor's office that will bring together the users, providers, and state department staff who are most involved in technology. The Ohio Education Computer Network forms the infrastructure of the Department of Education's electronic connection to the school districts and other agencies. The network uses the microwave system of the state of Ohio as well as advanced telecommunication links to connect to more than 3,000 school buildings in Ohio. The Department of Education depends upon this network for the transmission of much of the data necessary to fulfill statutory requirements of the districts. This strategic data includes financial, staff, and student elements. The recently installed Education Management Information System relies solely on the infrastructure of the network.

When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Project WET is a national program that is grounded in the belief that informed people are more likely to participate in the decision making process and to make a difference through their actions. Project WET believes that the development of a water ethic should begin at an early age and that children benefit from parents, educators and mentors who recognize not only the scientific but also the social and cultural aspects of water. The core of the program is the Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide. The guide, for kindergarten through twelfth grades, is a collection of water-related activities that are hands-on, easy to use, and fun! The 90+ activities incorporate a variety of formats, such as large and small group learning, whole-body activities, laboratory investigations, discussion of local and global topics and involvement in community service projects. Extractions: Melissa DeLisio, Assistant Director MEMO: AD 2003-06 SUBJECT:TUITION REIMBURSEMENT The June 25, 2003, JFS Memo AD 2003-04, addressed a suspension of Training Opportunities for Program Staff in Job and Family Services (TOPS in JFS) enrollments. The suspension was necessary to review TOPS in JFS cost allocation methodologies to assure compliance with federal program guidelines. As noted, an ODJFS workgroup convened to review TOPS in JFS issues. The workgroup's findings follow. Your feedback regarding the tuition reimbursement policy will be considered during the JFS Clearance process; however, the change in funding methodology is final. TOPS IN JFS BACKGROUND TOPS in JFS began in September 1989, in response to a Federal Food Stamp Audit that addressed a need for DHS to offer job-related training to promote consistency in the application of state/federal policy, statewide. The initial TOPS in JFS program operated as an inter-agency agreement between the Ohio Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Ohio Board of Regents (BOR); Hocking Technical College was contracted to develop curriculum and a training program for income maintenance, child support workers, and their supervisors. The development of job-related core courses met the DHS' federal mandate to offer job-related training. In 1995, BOR ended their involvement with TOPS in JFS and DHS continued the program via contractual agreements with educational institutions. Throughout the 1990s, TOPS in JFS expanded to include college/university-level courses and degree program approvals.
