Governments play numerous roles in nuclear energy and radioactive waste management. On one hand, they may be active promoters of nuclear energy in many countries. On the other hand, they are also the regulators of things nuclear. This dual role often leads to complex relationships and overlaps between various government departments or ministries. The situation can become even more complicated when several government agencies claim jurisdiction over different (or sometimes the same) aspects. To complete the picture, you often have to add in different levels of government (e.g. local, regional, state, and national). An important point to remember is that the regulatory framework and laws are different in each country. Some web sites may not be in English. See index

Extractions: Until recently, if rehabilitating an existing school would cost two-thirds or more of the cost of a new one, the commission's guidelines favored new construction. Now districts with historic school buildings (usually meaning schools listed on the National Register of Historic Places or a local register of historic properties) can request a waiver. With a waiver, a district can obtain the same amount of money that OSFC would put toward construction of a new school and use it to rehabilitate an existing one instead. Many older school buildings are neighborhood or community landmarks; the change allows boards who have such schools to refurbish and upgrade them with 21st century systems and equipment when it's economical to do so, preferred by the community, and approved by OSFC.

Ohios graduates will be civic minded and informed citizens prepared for productive lives within their families and communities. Learn and Serve Ohios goal is to support service learning programs that provide youth with opportunities to learn and develop by bringing together classroom instruction and community service. Grants are awarded to local education agencies that engage students K-12 in opportunities to help communities address education, public safety, human and environmental needs. Funds are used to create new programs, replicate existing programs and provide training and development to staff, students, and volunteers. Between 1998 and 2000, student involvement increased from 44,000 to 57,000. The number of beneficiaries has almost doubled from 44,000 in 1998, to 84,782 in 2000. Additionally, the hours of service provided by these students rose dramatically by 50%, from 520,000 to 782,250 between 1998 and 2000. The programs added value to Ohios communities is estimated at over $4,000,000 which is almost five times more than the funding we receive from CNS. ($5.15 min. wage x 782,250 hours = $4,028,587)
