Extractions: Gregory R. Passewitz A key factor to success in today's market place is finding subtle differences to give the business a marketing edge. A business that targets specialty markets will promote its products more effectively than a business aiming at the "average" customer. What makes the business unique? How can these unique features be promoted to "targeted" customers? Some businesses treat the market as a whole, focusing on what is common to the needs of customers, rather than on what is different. Often called undifferentiated marketing, this technique relies on mass advertising and is implemented on the basis of cost savings to the business. Undifferentiated marketing is successful when the competition is scarce or the product has mass appeal. Differentiated marketing builds greater loyalty and repeat purchasing by considering customer needs and wants. Differentiated marketing creates more total sales with a concentrated marketing effort in selected areas. Concentrated or target marketing gains market position with specialized market segments. Target marketing of products or services reduces the cost of production, distribution, and promotion. With differentiated marketing, there is the risk of the market going sour or a competitor entering the same market.

They also feed on fungi and decaying plant material. For more information about fungus gnats as pests of ornamentals, consult Ornamentals and Turf Insect Note 29 Occasionally, fungus gnats become a nuisance indoors in both residential and commercial buildings when adults emerge in large numbers from potted plants or some other chronic source of moisture (and subsequent mold growth). Adults are attracted to lights and are often first noticed at windows or light fixtures. Adult fungus gnats are about to inch long, slender, somewhat mosquito-like, with dark-colored antennae and delicate with long legs. Some species are gray to black in color, while others are orange-to-yellowish in color. Identification can be made by the vein patterns in the single pair of wings, which may be smoke-colored or light in color. One of the most common species, the darkwinged fungus gnat adults has eyes that meet above the base of the antennae. The eggs are extremely small, oval, smooth, shiny white and semi-transparent. Larvae or maggots are legless, thread-like, white, with black heads and inch long fully-grown. They are somewhat transparent so food in their guts can be seen through the body wall. The larvae spin silk-like cocoons in which they form pupae.

Extractions: The Ohio State University Introduction Animal agriculture is faced today with discovering innovative ways to dispose of their mortalities. This need has been brought on by the disappearance of rendering plants, concerns over burial and ground water pollution, and the economic cost and related issues of anaerobic decomposition in tanks. Composting of dead animals is one option that is now available (1,2,4). This brief article presents background information on composting dead animals in a rational, fashion. It discusses first the principles of composting and then composting dead animals. Basics of Composting Composting is a natural, biological process of decomposition of solid material in a predominantly aerobic environment. In it, bacteria, fungi and other small organisms break down organic materials (raw) to stable, useable organic substances called compost. The microorganisms use the most readily available parts of the waste as their food source and the compost that remains afterwards resembles humus and makes a good soil amendment. While composting occurs naturally, efficient composting requires properly prepared and maintained conditions and needs to be done so as to keep odor and other nuisance problems at a minimum. Under controlled conditions, composting is generally accomplished using two stages, primary (high rate) and secondary (curing). Items which need to be controlled in order for a composting operation to run properly include C/N ratio, moisture, porosity and temperature (4).
