MBL :: Inside The MBL :: Services program at the Scripps Institution of oceanography (SIO 1.4 Shall be certified as a scuba diving instructor or the campus, rests with the diving safety Officer. http://www.mbl.edu/inside/what/services/diving/section1.htm
Extractions: 1.10 THE SCIENTIFIC DIVING STANDARDS 1.11 The MBL Diving Standards The purpose of these diving standards is to ensure that all diving under the auspices of the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) is conducted in a manner that will maximize protection of divers from accidental injury and/or illness, and to set forth standards for training and certification which will allow a working reciprocity between the MBL and other organizations. Fulfillment of these purposes shall be consistent with the furtherance of safety. This manual has been developed and written with the assistance of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences which compiled the policies set forth in the diving manuals of several university, private and governmental diving programs. These programs share a common heritage with the diving program at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). Adherence to the SIO standards has proven both feasible and effective in protecting the health and safety of divers since 1954. Additional standards which extend this manual may be adopted by each campus, according to local procedures.

Coral cover is relatively low and consists mainly of encrusting species that are wave resistant. The most common corals are Porites lobata and Pocillopora meandrina . Encrusting corals such as Leptastrea purpurea Pavona varians and Montiora flabellata are found throughout the area.

Extractions: Faculty Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) is located on Monterey Bay in the fishing port of Moss Landing, which lies in the fishing port of Moss Landing, halfway between Santa Cruz and the Monterey Pennisula. As a site for a marine laboratory, Moss Landing has a number of assets. The head of the Monterey Submarine Canyon, the largest such feature on the west coast of the Americas, is situated a few hundred meters west of the Laboratories. Scientists can work conveniently on a diversity of deep-water habitats in the canyon because 1000-meter depths occur within one hour's ship steaming time of the harbor. To the east of the Laboratories is Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, one of the largest, relatively unspoiled salt marshes remaining on the Pacific coast. To the north and south, sand dunes, rocky intertidal environments, and subtidal kelp forests provide further valuable areas for scientific study. These features facilitate study and research in all disciplines of marine science. MLML is operated by a consortium of seven campuses of the California State University: Fresno Hayward Monterey Bay Sacramento ... San Jose State , and Stanislaus . San Jose State University serves as the administering institution. Classes at MLML are open to properly qualified upper-division undergraduate and graduate students enrolled through one of
